Okay, here's a start....you guys continue...

The Black Rock was a ship of dubious nature. While it mined for minerals it also carried slaves. Onboard was a science team to assist with mining, a ships cook and a ships doctor. It was captained by a Widmore.
The ship ventured off from its last destination going in the wrong direction. It was caught up in a storm, or so it thought. It was actually caught up in the reappearance of an island. The seas were tumultuous; there were loud gale winds blowing. The ship crashed onto the rocks of this island. Except the rocks were inland.
There were many crew who died in the event. But there were survivors. These survivors eventually began to do what came naturally to them and they started to explore their surroundings. They were fascinated by the strange magnetic pulse of the island. They began to use their equipment to excavate. They came upon a very mysterious and dangerous rock. It was unlike anything they had ever seen before. They were frieghtened. They chose to bury it again. But before they did that they wanted to make sure that it could not harm them. They encased the rock and used the steering wheel from the ship as a control to open and close the encasement. They grew to realize that not only did the island have this mysterious magnetic pulse but they also did not grow older. Human nature being what it is they tried to kill each other off and only a few survived. Two of the survivors were Richard Alpert and Daniel Rousseau.
This strange island that they were on had special powers. These powers came from the exotic matter burried deep within the island. This exotic matter was a neutron star. A dead star compressed so small with enormous electromagnetic power that fell to earth billions of years before. This star came from the Crab Nebula, one of three that used to spin in the center. As the star heated more it exploded with its electromagnetic field. Kept cool, it was safer. Time lords, guardians of the universe, kept tabs on this neutron star as it had the power to open a door into the fabric of time from its spinning. This was the door to a closed timelike curve. Where things begin and end, and then begin again. The time lords left a guardian for the star. A smoke that could morf into images from ones own mind. This smoke guarded the star deep underground. It was not a monster. It was its keeper.

I've had foggy versions of many of these ideas brewing in my head but the smoke monster is one I haven't been able to come up with a theory for. (Except that it's mechanical.) The neutron star theory is very interesting.

Thanks Boutte. That's just one of my smokie theories. I was hoping that I would get a few takers to continue the story. You never know, if we did that we might actually hit upon the real story and not even know it!

Smokie is some sort of guardian or alarm system on the island. Without a doubt. It's just a matter of where it came from to me. If it is a security system of some kind it still leaves open exactly what it is! It still could be a utility fog, which I've posted about before. All we know for sure about it is that it morphs into shapes or peices, usually comes from underground, and can scan your brain and see images from your past memories or experiences. I think that its morphing abilities include what it extracts from your mind, too. I think that it became Yemi, the black stallion, and the madusa spiders. In fact, I think that TPTB said it definitely was the madusa spiders. That thought could have easily been plucked out of poor Arst's memory.
I think that it could be a utility fog because that would enable it to take the shape of all of these things. Find my old posts about it. I wrote alot...for a change...LOL!!!

Really nicely done Notso, this is one of your best meldings so far! You have worked a lot of the Lost factors into this theory. We know that the exotic matter in the wheelroom is contained in an icy place. Was the ice always a part of the star like the ice is in a comet's tail?

The ice is what keeps the exotic matter from getting hot and emitting the electromagnetic radiation or Purple Sky. I think when the wheel is turned it somehow opens it in a controlled way letting it get just so hot which in turn holds open the black hole for spacetime travel. Did you read what I posted about black holes? Remember the whole to do about Willem JACOB van Stockem? Well, I found that the pysicist who coined the term black hole...his name is John A. Wheeler. Do you think it's a nod and a wink like the one to Jacob? The wheel and Wheeler.
