Why send these four to get Ben??

Obviously their individual backgrouds are key but why send just these three into harms way and not a larger more well armed force?? The gas masks show they expect trouble and if they are after Ben they must know he has armed people. Just curious why these 4.

My question also on the "Fansatic Four" thread! Even better how do you talk these folks into this mission? Money? Prestige? I bet they were all told different things and only Naomi knew the true purpose. None she is dead and these four are ill prepared to tackle what is going on.

I can't believe how excited Charlotte is, it seems like a dream come true to be on the island. She obviously knows about the Dharma Initiative as she knew what she was looking for with the polar bear, maybe she worked with the Dharma initiative remotely but never got a chance to actually get on the Island, or maybe her father/mother were involved in the project and she heard so many wonderful things about it she was really looking forward to check the island out for herself.

The only reason I can see logic in sending these four is their backgrounds, and the gas masks are because someone from the old Dharma got to the outside world that everyone was gassed. So however long that was (disregarding the time shift theory) like twenty years or since Ben purged, the old Dharma probably think the whole place is gaseous when they eventually find it.
So, the fantastic four to me so far is just a scouting party, to test the waters so to say.

Or maybe the gas masks are because they were fearful of some virus?? But I guess if that were the case then they would have put them on before jumping out lol. But I think Charlotte was def excited to be there and was prob already informed of this island by some inside people, seeing as how she seems to know about the Dharma Initiative.

I think these 4 were specifically chosen to complete specific tasks. Considering they chose a "ghost whisperer" tells me that Abaddon knows something very important about this island that happens to people when they die on it. Also they choose a physicist so that may tie in to the time travel/casimir effect stuff, they choose a pilot obviously so they could make it on and off the island and then the anthropologist maybe because there are some things we still have yet to learn? Maybe there are some ancient things hidden on that island? I mean we've already seen an ancient (4-toed haha) statue? I think this should get very exciting!!! :)

yep..."ancient things", as in (what seems to appear as ruins of a statue) 4 toed (granite,stone, whatever) foot.

i think they all have individual reasons when you look at their backgrounds.

The pilot Frank was supposed to be the pilot for 815 and knows that the man underwater was not the pilot...as we also know because we saw him murdered.

Charlotte discovered the polar bear in Tunisia, and saw the dharma logo, she also read about the plane crash in lots of different languages failing to believe it.

Dan we saw in the opening shot crying at the crash and didnt know why.

Miles is the only one who seems to be doing it for how much money he gets.

Im sure i saw in one of the sneak peeks for the economist that miles says he wouldnt be there were it for so much money they were paying him...

as far as all that goes, naomi was sent to handle ben and the situation. And obviously if there intent overall turns out to be malicious she was a greater liar than we give her credit for.

Seems to me they all have a connection to the island somehow. Not sure how yet. Maybe their parents were killed by Ben when he gassed the island and they were sent to get their revenge? Seems to be about the right age range.

And do not forget that Naomi ("don't call me Campbell") was supposed to be the glue and brains of the outfit. The Fantastic Four were probably on a need to know basis. Remember that they did not come until they heard from Naomi on the ground. They could not land, jumped, and got scattered. Turns out that Naomi's dead and they are now winging it.
