Maybe I need to rewatch season four but I don't have time for it. I've been thinking about the idea of the Island keeping people alive and some questions occurred to me.
Charley
Desmond had visions of Charley's death which he prevented on several occasions. However fate/destiny/the Island continually tried to course correct. Was the Island keeping hom alive until he could turn off the jamming mechanism or was the Island trying to kill him order to prevent him from doing so and there by keeping the O6 from escaping.?
If he was being kept alive by the Island it was so that he could help get the O6 off the Island. This would seem to go against what Locke and Ben claim the Island wanted. Are there two opposing powers on the Island?
Mikhail
The Island was definitely keeping him alive. He went through the sonic gate which caused seemingly fatal results only to reappear later apparently unharmed. In the looking glass he is shot with a spear gun but managed to escape and flood the station. Was Charlie now able to die because he had fulfilled his purpose? Again this would seem to be counter to the Islands purposes.
Locke
He fell out of a 9 stort window and survived, survived the plane crash and and Ben's murder attempt. Fate obviously intended for Locke to make his way to the Island. But why? Once he assumed leadership "bad things happened". Then he shows up in a coffin in LA. Why was the Island keeping him alive? Why did it allow him to die?
Michael
Why was the Island keeping him alive? What did he accomplish? disabling the ships engines didn't prevent the mercs from reaching the Island. Did he provide the background info on Keamy and his men? What good did that do? What event made him expendable and therefore able to die? It's seems to me the only thing he accomplished was to enable the helicopter to provide an escape vehicle for the O6 and then return to pick up Des, Aaron and Sun. Actually the lifeboat is what they escaped in and that wasn't really necessary because the sail boat (Des's) was there the whole time and would have been much more suitable.
Keeping the bomb from exploding allowed 3survivors and 2 of the O6 to get on the helicopter but that seems like a long way around.
Is the Island falable or are conflicting forces involved.
