Just outside the Crab Nebula is where the writers have said the series will end.
The Sinagua Indians (Western Anasazi) observed and recorded this event as seen in their petroglyphs on the canyon wall of The Big Deer site in Arizona.
The crab supernova was visible for 23 days in daylight and 653 days to the naked eye in the night sky. These petroglyphs show that with their naked eyes the Sinagua astronomers were observing the Crab Nebula Supernova on May 24, 1054. The star was 4 times brighter than the planet Venus. The guest star was noted in July 4th, 1054 by Chinese astronomers. Quickly see the petroglyphs and the labels explaining them on the link below:

so are you saying what they meant by just outside the crab nebula is not location but time?

I think what they are saying is that one of the two supernovas in the Crab Nebula is the negatively charged exotic matter at one end of the black hole that the donkey wheel controls. The other end is on earth. One side is a black hole and the other side is a white hole and they are connected by a wormhole. This does exist in theory.

ok, forgive me for being blunt, but what does that mean in english?

No, please forgive me. I'm a science nerd and I always think everyone else is, too.

At the center of the Crab Nebula are two collapsed stars. A collapsed star is often called a supernova remnant. It is vertually a dead star but it has an enormous electromagnetic pull and electromagnetic radiation and is very, very tiny. What happens is the star dies and just collapses in on itself until it is something very small with a huge gravity and is made up of very, very hot gases. They are also called singularities. This dead star is made up of negatively charged exotic matter which is the same term that TPTB used to describe what was behind the donkey wheel. I think that one of the Dr. Chang/Candle/Haliwax, etc. videos also used the term. Anyway, it has been theorized, by Stephen Hawking I believe, that negatively charged exotic matter could concievably hold open a wormhole so that it won't collapse in on itself. There is another theory theory that white holes exist to essentially spit out some of the stuff that is digested by black holes. In one end and out the other! And the two are connected by a wormhole. Think about two funnels. Now, hold the skinny ends together so you have this "tube" in the middle of the two funnels. That's kind of what it would look like. If it really does exist. Scientifically, it is theoretical. In reality, well, they know black holes exist only because of the actions of the stuff around them. You cannot see a black hole. They are invisible. No light can escape the gravitational pull of the black hole. And that supernova is what is the "bottom" of the black hole, even though there is no real bottom as we understand.
I hope that helps. I hope I am being accurate, also.

I just had to add this little paragraph I read in Wiki about the Crab Nebula:

At the centre of the Crab Nebula are two faint stars, one of which is the star responsible for existence of the nebula. It was identified as such in 1942, when Rudolf Minkowski found that its optical spectrum was extremely unusual. The region around the star was found to be a strong source of radio waves in 1949 and X-rays in 1963, and was identified as one of the brightest objects in the sky in gamma rays in 1967. Then, in 1968, the star was found to be emitting its radiation in rapid pulses, becoming one of the first pulsars to be discovered.

So, remember the song that Sayid and Hurley picked up on the little radio one night while sitting on the beach in season one? The song was from the 40's. It's called Moonlight Serenade. The other song that was important, I think, was written on one of Rousseau's maps over and over. Shannon translated it. It's called Le Mer. The original French version was also from that era. So, could these two songs possibly be two clues that lead us to the Crab Nebula? Could be. So would the name Minkowski! By the way, I have been thinking of the mathematician Hermann Minkowski, That is the uncle of this Minkowski....whose middle name, by the way, is Bernhard....the German spelling for Bernard. Hmmm....

Also...
Pulsars are sources of powerful electromagnetic radiation, emitted in short and extremely regular pulses many times a second. They were a great mystery when discovered in 1967, and the team which identified the first one considered the possibility that it could be a signal from an advanced civilization. However, the discovery of a pulsating radio source in the centre of the Crab Nebula was strong evidence that pulsars were formed by supernova explosions. They are now understood to be rapidly rotating neutron stars, whose powerful magnetic field concentrates their radiation emissions into narrow beams.

So, remember why the button was being pushed every 108 minutes? My theory was that it released bursts of electromagnetic waves in a very controlled manner. When the button wasn't pushed the Swan imploded. Implosion....very important. Like when the star collapses in on itself, it you might say, implodes. Anyway, I figured by pushing the button it stopped the exotic matter from overheating. The overheating is what causes the electromagnetic releases. Remember, the donkey wheel is in an ice cave. So, pushing the button does something to release small blasts of electromagnitism and cool off the exotic matter. Remember the purple sky event when it imploded? In real science it is called an ultraviolet light catastrophy. It is caused by a massive release of electromagnetic radiation. It really does turn the "sky purple." Without the computer, this sucker is just doing its thing and pulsing away. Maybe that's why we have weird time differences, too. Do you remember the blast door map in the Swan? There were a bunch of notes on it and much of it refered to fatal accidents, etc. I think that's what they were talking about. And the hazmat suit that Kelvin wore? Well, maybe more of a radiation suit. That could be why Rose's cancer is gone. Lot's of little tid bits that could really be good clues.

Sorry to go on and on before. But once I get started it's hard to stop! LOL!!!

Great explanations there NotSoLost! I dub you QuantumGal!!! Thanks for putting that together so very well. You know, I hope that at least some of this theory turns out to be true--then I'll be able to understand a lot of it, thanks to you!:D And even if after the show ends, they do go to France, or Tunisia, I won't be too upset!LOL

Ok, so let me see if I can understand. The Crab Nebula is the tube in between the black hole and the white hole. Much like turning reverse on the vacuum cleaner. So the island will be spit out on the opposite side of the universe? as in not on earth?

Yep, that's what I'm thinking anyway. No way of knowing yet if it's even close to what's really going on!!!
I don't really think the island is an island. I am starting to lean to it being some kind of craft itself now. I had thought that a craft may have crashed there billions of years ago but am changing my mind.
I like your vacuum analogy. It gets sucked in one side (black hole), travels through the wormhole and spit out the other side (white hole). Whatever it is, be it island or other, I believe it is traveling around the event horizon of the black hole. After it gets sucked in I think it comes out somewhere near the Crab Nebula! How nuts is that?????
