Forgive me but i don't remember if there was any SPECIFIC reason why Miles chose to stay on the island. Can any1 fill me in?

He knew that Charlotte had been on the island, so he obviousy knows more about what's going on then Charlotte is aware. He also had quite a talk with Naomi when she was dead. Maybe she let him in on what was going on, and why he was chosen to go to the island.

I had forgotten about the way Miles hovered over Naomi when she was dead. He does use his time wisely, doesn't he! That probably also has something to do with his wanting 3 point 2 million from Ben. Very interesting reminder there, Unbridled!:)

miles said he knows who ben is.said to ben something like "dont treat me like one of them" i guess maybe daniel knows ben too but he's forgotten everything
Maybe he's looking for his (probable) father, Pierre Chang/Haliwax

This is a bizarre thought, but could Miles converse with a dead body part, like Chang's arm? Or are thoughts only in the brain or the spirit/essence of the person? Hmmmmm. Could he have gotten something out of the lone eyeball? The beard that someone wore? The gravel surrounding Jacob's cabin?????

Miles needed it, it seems, in the boy's room to talk to the boy who died. No such item is with him on the island, though. Was it just a prop? Does anyone know anything about what it was supposed to do?

I took the whole dustbuster thing to be more of a prop, like you said. Miles is just trying to make it seem more Ghostbusterish for the people who hire him.

He went from being Locke's prisoner to heading toward the beach with Sawyer. I don't think he elected to leave the island or stay behind.

Miles seems to be afraid of the grenade in his mouth. Who took it out Kate?

I think it's meant to be his whole name.
The writers created the role of Miles specifically for Leung after seeing him guest star on The Sopranos. Leung was the only actor to read for the part. They chose his name because it resembles "maelstrom", another word for a powerful whirlpool. Reaction to the character has been positive.

You know, that makes a lot of sense. Could Haliwax be his father?
There could be many reasons why he is there. Maybe he is like the heir to the island or the part that Haliwax owned and he is there to claim it and find out what happened to his father.
If Haliwax is his father, he may know tons of stuff about the island. Could Haliwax have left a manual or something like that for Miles?
Anything is possible but Haliwax being his father would be an interesting twist.

When Miles is talking to Naomi's body in a hushed tone, he is actually talking in reverse - much like the Whispers. When the audio is reversed he is clearly saying "You've got to see it through".

That is very interesting about him speaking in reverse!
I always assumed Miles' ghostbuster weapon generated some kind of electromagnetic force in the room... and he doesn't need such a gadget on the island because it is already an electromagnetic anomaly...
Has anyone ever considered that he might not be speaking to ghosts, but speaking to them in a different time zone, ie; when they were still alive?

very insightful post
I'v ethought Miles' abilities would possibly lead to him communicating with the purged DI, or the Black Rock crew still chained up in the ship.

Ummm, I don't think it's the crew of the Black Rock that are chained up in there. It was also a slave ship. But, I would be interested in hearing from the crew perspective from Miles. Unless, of course, Daniel is a crew member!

Either way, you know what, it'd be great to hear their perspective.
