I was watching a movie this past weekend, The Time Machine, and had a few thoughts. It was not the original movie but a fairly recent remake.
In the movie, the physicists fiance gets shot and killed just moments after he proposes. That was his motivation to build a time machine. He wanted to go back in time and prevent her death. He built his machine, went back in time and tried to change the events around their being mugged and her being shot. Instead of a walk through the park where it all happened, he elected for a walk down the busy street. Well, guess what? She was killed by an out of control car or something instead. Just like Mrs. Hawking says, "The universe has a way of course correcting itself." So, he went back in time only to find out that he could not change what the outcome would be.
Next, I noticed that on his first excursion back in time, the lever that controlled the time machine; a golden stick with a big glass door knob as the top, was removed by him so no one could use the time machine. In other words, it was like the on/off lever or something. It immediately made me thing of Ben's mysterious baton! Could it really serve a dual purpose? Could it be something similar? Does anyone remember if he had it when he went into the secret chamber in his house to call out smokie? I was thinking about that and thought maybe it was part of how he controlled smokie.
Other than that, the movie was a bomb, but it did get me to thinking....
