Does anyone know what the symbol is on the bags? Is it a general Hazardous poison symbol?

I wonder what is in the bags?

Not sure about the application for these haz mats, but i assume they are for general purpose. The masks were were dua cartridge full face resperators, good for dusts and mists and tear gas. Here are my thoughts on this crate:

I would not read to much into this. It appears that the plan was to land the chopper, not bail out. I suspect that the chopper stored a lot of different supplies for various contingencies, one being potential hazardous materials. Part of standard emergency response supplies. They were not fully sure of what they would expect to face on the island. (Remember that there were haz-mat suits and respirators in the Hatch and at Dharma HQ).
Daniel said they were losing power so they started dumping supplies, so I suspect that their are several other scattered metal boxes with interesting supplies which may come into play. I also would not be surprised if someone finds Daniel's lost pack, with his "phone" and other curious items (a copy of Ben's picture, island maps, instructions?).

are those bags just filled with air like for padding/protective reasons? To protect the masks from getting damaged?

I think the bags Haz-mat suits, which are essentially throw-away palstic coveralls

Here is my thought, they have been hired by the parent company of Dharma to go and investigate what happened to the people of the Dharma project. Somehow they heard that they were executed using some type of Gas ..... hence the chem suits and mask's.
Just a thought.

I think thats a plausible theory :)
