Remember how we've all tried to tell if the black bamboo near Jack is the baton?
Well, in searching for answers I found out some interesting facts about bamboo. There are rare types of bamboo that are black!
BEGINNING OF TAPE?
B.T. stands for Bamboo Tree and for among other things, beginning of tape. As in the beginning of Lost?
POISON GAS?
And there are shoots of a giant bamboo species that contain cyanide and are not edible to humans--(poison gas?)
BEN'S BATON, THE HUTS?
Bamboo is used for martial arts weaponry rayon fabric, housing construction (huts?) medicine and masts of ships. Sharpened bamboo is used for tatoo (Thailand girl tattooing Jack). And it is used for bows-- which seem to play a part in the Season 5 shows.
In Chinese culture the bamboo's long life is a symbol of longevity. Bamboo means perseverance under harsh conditions.
THE TEMPLE?
In Japan a bamboo forest sometimes surrounds a Shinto Shrine as part of a sacred barrier against evil. Many Buddhist temples have bamboo groves. There is also a picture of what they termed a bamboo cathedral showing the over-arching canopy of a bamboo canes and growth.
JACOB, CHRISTIAN, JACK, AARON?
In Vietnamese culture their proverb says that when the bamboo is old, the bamboo sprouts appear. If the previous generation dies, the children will take their place. This sounds similar to the eternal return concept.. THERE IS AN ASIAN BELIEF THAT HUMANITY EMERGED FROM A BAMBOO STEM.
ISLAND ADAM AND EVE?
In the Phillippine creation myth, the legend tells that the first man and women each emerged from split bamboo stems on an island created after the battle of the elemental forces of SKY and OCEAN.
THE PERENNIAL GRASS:
Black Bamboo changes from green to black over time. It grows from 23 to 28 feet tall. Bamboo is flexible and enduring and it is also a symbol of the ability to move with the times and adapt to the changes in life. These plants are thought to protect the occupants of a house from unseen forces. It is a wood element, harmonizes a given space of the house, and purifies the air around it-Feng Shui.
BAMBOO BROUGHT THE SICKNESS?
Large bamboo forests attract rodents because the flowers and shoots are very edible in most kinds of bamboo. Rodent-increased population leads to disease and famine in nearby human populations. Rats carry typhus, typhoid, and bubonic plague.
The bamboo plant is the fastest growing plant on Earth--clocked as surging skyward as fast as 121 cm. or 47.6 inches in a 24 hour period!!!
Many prehistoric bamboos exceeded heights of 250 feet.!!
So, maybe it is no coincidence that Jack is seen at the Beginning of the Tape lying in a bamboo forest next to black bamboo?
