Okay, I'm a little handicapped because the 4th disc of the season 4 DVD set I got was messed up. I was only able to watch the last two shows one time. I noticed something interesting and if anyone else can watch please go back and take a look.
When Ben is on his way to the ladder in the ice caves and he is going through that narrow tunnel there are two wooden planks about 2 or 3 feet apart on the side. They are standing straight up. I think the tops of them were rounded. They looked like grave markers to me. I thought of Adam and Eve immediately.
Can someone post this picture for us to look at? I think it is worth trying to see what they really are. Thanks gang.

Are you talking about those Markings? I thought they was quite weird too.

Somebody told me that they were the tops of the ladder because I too had thought they were some kind of important stele-like monument. They were tricky looking. Maybe the ladder was made from something else that was made of wood and did have markings on it?IDK

Yeah, it was the the top of the ladder. I used to have a screencap of it.

Thanks ArchangelPlayer for the pic. What if the ladder came from the Black Rock? It might have gone down into the hold of the ship. The wood looks similar to the thickness of a plank from a building or a ship. If it were from the Black Rock it might have some markings carved on it below where we are able to see. Wild speculation, but who knows. And why would that make it important, IDK.

Thanks gang for clearing that up. Nice photo ArchAngel, it puts it in perspective for me. So, it does look like yet something else that has come from the Black Rock. Jacob's cabin had many, many items that appeared to be English, mid 1800's looking as well. The cabin itself looked like it was made of planks from the ship even though Godspeed said he built it and was chopping a tree. I wonder if he really built Jacob's cabin or something else. There are many lanterns in the ice cave, as in Jacob's cabin and from Desmond's sailboat. They all look the same. I don't know if that's supposed to mean something or not or if the props department just had one style of lantern. LOL!
If the ladder is from the Black Rock then that would go along with what we are saying that it was the crew from the Black Rock that may have stumbled on the exotic matter. Did you all notice that the tunnel Ben was crawling through to get to the ladder looked as though it had been drilled out or hand dug? It had these marks on the walls that looked like they were from a drill to me. Subtle, large spiral type markings. I think the wheel in the ice cave came from the ship as well. It looks as though it would have. If they discovered the exotic matter and it scared them because of its power then it would be logical that they built some kind of container around it and used the wheel as a lever to open and close the container. They may have been scared but they weren't stupid and recognized the value of the exotic matter. This would be especially true if Alvar Hanso was on the ship as well as a Widmore....they were no dumbies.

hmmm it could have been an old anchor capstan;

I think indeed you are right, large clippers of the period would have used such large either wooden or cast iron capstan wheels to raise the sea anchor...it does indeed bear a strong resemblence to the donkey wheel....they used to be turned by teams of men but on ship they were greased, not frozen..
also, in my opinion, the stone breastwork around the wheel does seem to be in keeping with that period.....I think you might well be onto something there Notsolost...

Thanks, I've only been SCREAMING it since we saw the darn thing! LOL!!! I have also been tracking exactly where we see the heiroglyphs....the carvings and not the countdown clock, that is. I think the sailors on the Black Rock fell into the wormhole and wound up in Tunisia or Egypt or something (as the coordinates change so does that landing zone) and they may have been tossed back in time. The power of the raw EM radiation from the exotic matter would have been extremely strong when they dug it up for the first time. I wonder if that's where Richard came from...ancient Egypt? Hmmm...

curiouser and curiouser...maybe he's Ramses! lol
there is definately an egyptian style to the hieroglyphic carvings...but also the Christian style fish and a strange style of crucifix (maltese cross? or celtic cross?).....thing is there is a mish-mash of carvings and the ones at the top look cruder and newer but the actual bulk of the 'door' does indeed look ancient and broken...I just wish i could see the cartouches better! The old carving look egyptian certainly but I wish i could see them better..
[edit] ohhh just noticed something...the 'soldier' figures look like they're wearing Conquistador era armour to me, but they may be wearing an Egyptian Kirta (skirt/kilt) also...but they do seem to have Spanish breastplates and helmets....at least one of them does? But they are drawn in the Egyptian style.....this is going to drive me mad now!

Are you talking about the picture of Ben looking at the cave door? I don't know which photo you mean. If that's what you mean I don't see anything Spanish-Conquestador about them. They look like the run of the mill figures on many Egyptian carvings or paintings to me. But, I am no expert.

that's the one yes mate, i'm not sure but to me the drawings seem to represent at least helmets (or hats perhaps) but one of them does seem to maybe, possible have a breastplate? hard to say but that's what it looks like to me..

I do believe that the ancient Egyptians may have worn breastplates also. I remember some old movies with Charlton Heston as an Egyptian son of emperor type. He wore what looked like a breastplate. Check out this website for info:

hmmm you could be right but of the two figures, the top one looks conquistador-ish to me
http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.costumeloft.com/gallery/images/00239.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.costumeloft.com/gallery/picture_popups/00239.htm&usg=__rNgc16HdXuErW12qu-JBGqYAbAM=&h=844&w=449&sz=81&hl=en&start=2&um=1&tbnid=sy-N-U4hpR_U6M:&tbnh=145&tbnw=77&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dconquistador%2Barmour%26um%3D1%26hl%3 Den%26sa%3DN
also there is possible christian imagery, the fish and possible crucifix....maybe the lower of the two figures is Egyptian (what I thought was a hat could be a headdress or even hair) but something about the upper figure suggests my original premise to me....also, what is that lower figure holding? Are they presenting a sword (looks like that if i zoom right in)?

There is an old thread from when we first saw the door. XmasDVD had a great photo of it and someone, if not him, translated the whole thing. Maybe you could find the thread. If I had the time I would look for you but I am not able to right now.

I found it and will have a good mooch methinks, cheers for that NotSoLost!
Back to the original before i went way off on tangent, I'm sure the ice cave was orginally 'built' by the blackrock crew and I do like your Egyptian angle!

Indeed very interseting!!!!!
"Wheel of Dharma" is a symbol representing dharma, the Buddha's teaching of the path to enlightenment. It is also sometimes translated as wheel of doctrine or wheel of law.

Yep, saw that a long time ago. It's called a "Donkey Wheel" because TPTB always keep the final episode each season a big secret. That was their secret name for the episode. It kind of just stuck. The past season finalies were called "Bagel" & "Challah" I believe. So, don't be fooled thinking that because it's called "donkey" it has to do with an animal, like the polar bears. They talk about it on one of the commentaries of the season 4 DVD set. They are very funny talking about it.

You guys have brought up some interesting points. I've been away for a little while so missed some threads. I agree that Jacob's cabin and the place where Ben moved the Island were probably made using things from the Black Rock. They definitely look to be that time period-- including the "Donkey Wheel". Didn't they say that the Black Rock was bring supplies to a mining colony? Then they could have had a drill or supplies to carve out the tunnel to the wheel.
Is it possible that when someone moves the Island it transports them to the same spot on the opposite side of the earth? Or maybe shoots them down the bearing needed to go to and from the Island? I'll have to look at Tunisia on a map and see what is on the other side.
