They Whisper....

Hey all
Has neone touched on the subject of the orgins of the whispers right before one of our others show up or christain shepard magically appears. Is it all just to let the audience know they are coming or is it something more. Does it have to do with
1) the islands security system
2) People traveling backwards in time (whispers are backwards) hence the begining of the trailer...

I'm thinking it's either:

A.Whispers from the dead. There are already ghosts, so it's not too out there.

B."Pockets" wherein voices from any time can be trapped, and heard at any random time.

I have a few ideas:
It could be the "smoke monster". If you listen/read the whisper transcripts you hear things like "Do you you think he saw us?" and "Should we go see him?" etc.
You also hear alot of things about peoples pasts, E.G when Sawyer was confronted by whispers you heard Frank Ducketts voice, this is much like the smoke monster who seems to "scan" your past.
