Whats the deal with Walt
I know I’m rehashing old material as the discussions seem to be focusing on newer topics, but I have been thinking about this for a while.

I am hoping that some of your can help me understand what’s the deal with Walt? I have been thinking about this and I just can’t even begin to get my mind around it. The last time we saw what we believe to be the real live Walt was when he left the island with his father. So what’s behind his returning first to Shannon, then Locke in the pit. I am wondering if its Walt and his ability to “transport” himself or his image to, from and across the island. Is it ol’ smokey posing as Walt to get a point across? In either case why?

If I'm not mistaken, Walt was still on the island when he appeared to Shannon - but for some odd reason he was soaking wet and speaking backwards.

And I'm not sure about his appearance when Locke was shot. For me, that reeks of being the work of the island. For whatever reason, Jacob and the island needed Locke to get rid of the freighter people - and then suddenly Walt shows up and tells Locke the same message. Walt could be working independently, but I can't really say for sure.

I'm just not sure. Like I said in the other thread, I've been trying to figure out the Walt mystery for a long time, and we haven't learned too much about him. But I was happy to see him talk to Hurley when the O'6 got off the island, and I'm hoping that means we see more of him in the future.

From Lostpedia...

It has been confirmed in Lost: The Answers as well as in 3-21-08 podcast, by writers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, that these apparitions are generated by the Monster.

Not long after he was taken off the raft, a water-drenched Walt appeared before Shannon, who had just followed Walt's dog Vincent into the jungle. He spoke to her in incomprehensible whispers that sounded like reversed or backwards speech. Three nights later, the same thing happened and Shannon screamed in terror but when Sayid came to her Walt had disappeared. Later in the jungle, both Sayid and Shannon heard whispers and then saw Walt. When Walt walked back into the jungle, Shannon followed him, only to be accidentally shot and killed by Ana Lucia.

Walt appeared to Locke in the DHARMA Initiative's mass grave, stopping him from committing suicide. Locke believed he was once again paralyzed from the waist down but Walt told him he was wrong and urged him to get up. He then told Locke that Locke had work to do.

Thanks for those photos Missie, it actually made me realize something. The big clue here is the clothes that Walt is wearing. Look at the last time we, and the island, saw Walt before he left the island. (Sorry for the poor screen shot, it was the best I could find)

Notice how his clothes are exactly the same? My guess is that the island mimicked the last time it saw Walt, which is why he's wearing the same clothes. So Walt's appearance = Smoke Monster (or island's other power).

Here you go, a photo of Walt appearing to Shannon before she gets shot - he's wearing the same clothes as he was wearing when he got taken off the raft and when he left the island.

Wow...
I think smokie takes the images from peoples memories too. For instance, it was confirmed by Damelton that Yemi was a manifestation. But he was never on the island... Smokie did however come face to face with Eko and it looked alot like he was reading his memories. Then later Yemi appears. Also it was confirmed that Kates horse was a manifestation. Interesting!

Last night I was more aware of Walt then before. He had a lot to say that I must have just over looked the first 50 times I watched it. Saying his other Dad told him he was lucky, seemed to be a factor but can't figure it out. He had such a connection to John. I feel they have known each other before. Maybe the last time they were both on the Island!

I always found it interesting that in the uk season one promo where the cast aways are dancing on the beach in morbid outfits (if you havnt seen look it up.. its amazing!) Walt is mimiking Locke as he conducting the music. (Kinda leading the pack).

Woah.. I thought just occured to me... Maybe Walt was all wet when he appeared to Shannon because the last time he was seen was when he was on the raft in the ocean.

That's what I always thought. And before anyone says it, he appeared all wet before it started raining.

I think it makes most sense that way. Shannon was one of the few people who knew the bottle with the messages washed ashore. So she knew something happened to the raft.

Why shannon though? Why would the monster want Walt to appear to her? Anyone think maybe Walt was actually appearing to Vincent?

I take that back. Here is what Lost was saying in reverse speech...

Not long after he was taken off the raft, a water-drenched Walt appeared before Shannon, who had just followed a fleeing Vincent into the jungle. Shannon heard him whisper incomprehensibly, which has been ascribed to reversed or backwards speech. The translation of the speech is reportedly "Push the button. Don't push the button. Bad."
Three nights later, Walt again appeared to Shannon, this time in the new tent that Sayid had just made for her. Walt was again dripping wet and spoke in reversed speech, "They're coming and they're close". [1] Sayid returned to Shannon's screams, but Walt had disappeared and Sayid did not believe her account. The next day, Shannon resorted to using Vincent to help find Walt, with the Labrador leading her into the jungle. A doubting Sayid followed her, contesting that Walt was still on the raft, but Shannon revealed that they had found the message bottle. Later in the jungle, the two heard the whispers and Walt appeared wet with his finger to his lips, saying, "Shhh". Sayid saw him this time, and when Walt walked back into the jungle, Shannon followed him, only to be accidentally shot by Ana Lucia.
