Why is he invisible? And why does he need help if he "controls" the island? And is his biz related to the monster smokie action going on?

If you go frame by frame the scene that Locke "meets" Jacob... Jacob is visible for about 3-4 frames. So he's not invisible all of the time.

I think that Jacob wants help because ben is ruining his island and going against his wishes, and he thinks that locke can do a better job... maybe...

I think he's actually a giant cream cracker who has developed sentience and self-awareness & now has a plot to bring people to his island and use them in his own malevolent schemes to break free and control the world. I warned people for years that this was going to happen...

He is the consciousness of the island itself! :p:)

There have been many threads about this topic. Jon has made one that has a lot of good conversation and he has presented some interesting notions about the topic himself. From what I have gathered, Jacob is the "better" half of the Island's inner workings, or its soul.... although I dont like the idea of a soul, I will use the term for lack of a more adequate description. The Black Smoke, as you could imagine, is the darker side of the Island.

The only rub here is the scene from the first season where Locke encounters the Smoke. He says there was a bright light and he was previewed to the beauty of the Island itself. Good? Bad? It is all the same.

So Jacob is Luke and smokie is his father. You don't know the power of the dark side! Maybe Widmore is the emporer or is it Ben?
Sawyer is Han
Hurley is Jabba the hut. Soon he will have Kate chained to him.
