because in order to go forward in time, the characters must go back. I see this see-saw happening several times in this episode because that is the reason why they are thrown forward in time, then back in time, then forward, etc. It's like the Back to the Future movie series where MJ Fox has to go back, then go forward, and then go back again in order to get back to the present.
For example, Desmond's memory of Faraday does not exist throughout the past seasons UNTIL we go forward to this point where the island disappears and Daniel goes backwards, then forwards, and then backwards again in time. When Daniel gets to the hatch (at last...took long enough) he then plants that memory with Desmond...so NOW it exists. The memory was waiting for Daniel to get to that point so that it could exist or occur and then go on to the next set of actions. The timeline now includes that memory which is why all of a sudden Desmond remembers it. Make sense???
The other example is Richard going to get the bullet out of Locke's leg. Richard says that John tells him at a future point to look for him at the plane. Locke has not yet hit the action point where he tells this to Richard, but the sequence is activated...meaning those actions now exist. They were not activated prior to Locke getting shot by Ethan (probably), etc.
Lastly, Daniel's book is written at some point as a reminder of all those twists and turns. The book exists because the actions that lead him to write them in the journal must also exist...but he just hasn't gotten to them yet.
I think I get what's happening though it is confusing. Hopefully this makes sense.
