Here is my question. Im way confused. if you cannot change the past and what has happened has happened, how is ethan alive when lockes sees him. And when faraday tells sawyer he cannot make desmond open the door cause they havent met before, does that mean faraday had already had spoken to desmond before that. i hope i make sense but for 4 years i have been pretty solid in following the plot and now im off. also, the first scene with dr candle, how is faraday there? how old is he and how was he on the island before. someone help.....

I was thinking about that too. Also, Richard tells Locke something like What comes around goes around, referring to Ethan shooting Locke.

Don't you think that Desmond was inside so it didn't have anything to do with him? Didn't we see Desmond naked after one of the flashes? That is why he knew all that stuff was going to happen. Like Charlie and such.

1 - Locke went to a time before Ethan was killed, therefore, Ethan is alive.

2 - Apparently, yes. From the way Dan explained time, he was supposed to speak to Desmond at that moment. Just like Locke was supposed to get shot by Ethan and just like Richard knew to meet Locke there and help him.

3 - I have no idea why Dan is in the past with Dr. Candle. He is now in that same boat as Richard.

The answer to 3 might be that Dan and his mom(?)(the lady in Oxford at the chalk board writing down the stuff) figured out time travel and Dan was able to go back in time to when Dharma was building the Station so he could get a peek at it. I mean, it only makes sense that he would know about it. Look at how they were trcking the island as it traveled through time. Did you notice how the pendulum looking thingy was marking spots on a world map? It was marking where the island reappeared after the flashes. They had to have prior knowledge of the island's powers to be able to track it.

Could be. It could also be that in an upcoming island jump, the entire crew goes back to the Dharma days and Daniel sneaks his way in to the Orchid to try and learn more about it.

I like that idea better. That makes perfect sense! When he flashes back, why not take a peek at it? He was gone from the beach for two hours????

Thats what I think. Maybe he thinks he can stop the time jumping by turning the wheel.

You know, I think it's like this. Daniel said you can't change what has happened.
When they were going to the hatch they found it destroyed. then the light came and the hatch was back to new. But what Daniel means is that you can't prevent that the hatch will be destroyed.
Like when Locke saw Ethan he could have told him what to do to stay alive but it wouldn't work. So everything that has happened can't be changed.
