And Dz, as for thelawgiver reference, see below:

The Lawgiver is an orangutan character in the science fiction movie series Planet of the Apes. While mentioned and quoted in the first two installments of the series, the Lawgiver only appears in the final Apes film, 1973's Battle for the Planet of the Apes, played by actor-director John Huston.

The Lawgiver is to the ape society in Planet of the Apes and Beneath the Planet of the Apes a figure much like Moses, Confucius or Mao Zedong — his writings and quotes form the basis of the apes' system of laws and customs, particularly with regard to humans, whom the Lawgiver declared "the devil's pawn", to be shunned and driven out, if not destroyed outright. Statues of the Lawgiver are common around Ape City; when the gorilla army sees a vision of such a statue bleeding, they panic, showing their regard for this icon.

While the Lawgiver's works were used and quoted daily by the apes, they weren't the only ape writings; secret scrolls told the details of the apes' rise to dominance, but were kept from the masses. Dr. Zaius, the Chief Defender of the Faith in the ape world some 1200 years after the Lawgiver, kept a copy of the Lawgiver's essential decrees in his coat pocket, but kept the secret scrolls under lock and key.

Through the course of the series, the chimpanzee Caesar becomes leader of the apes, presumably changing the timeline that led to the world abandoned by his parents, Zira and Cornelius, who travelled to Earth's past. By the time the Lawgiver appears in Battle, the children he addresses (as he tells them about Caesar) are a mix of both humans and apes; the joint society Caesar ultimately promoted appeared to have worked, and instead of condemning humans, the Lawgiver accepts them as his students.

The director of Battle has stated the final shot of the film, with a tear running down Caesar's eye, meant in his view that the joint ape-human society would fail.

Yep the Hydra Station is underwater off the coast of the island.

When the losties were held by the others the station was on a different island right? And that station was called Hydra

Well thats a possibility, but the two mountain ridges look like they were created by continental collisions (converging tectonic plates) just like the Himalayas and the Appalachians were created. By two continents smashing into one anther... there's TWO of these mountain ridges... so assuming the topographic map is accurate and assuming that geology in Lost acts like geology in the real world... than there had to be TWO other continental tectonic plates on either side of that island at some point. The DO NOT look like mountains formed by volcanoes (like Hawaii).

So... an island between two continents that maybe got smashed up from continental drift and lets just say disappeared through a worm hole (and back out into the south Pacific)... for arguments sake, lets say this is true...

Where would we find two continents that close together... oh... maybe between African and Europe? Specifically near... oh... Tunisia? With wandering polar bears?

lostmama
02-14-2008, 09:01 PM
AWESOME assumption!!!!

It does look like no. america, so. america, asia and africa....in various shapes...which would explain the polar bear....in Tunisia AND would also explain the differences in "where the plane crashed" and "where they thought it crashed."

VERY INTERESTING!!!!!!! I like the way you think Miss Julie!

Dz-now that's an avatar! Patchy gives his patch of approval.

Now let's discuss island formation, which are the peaks of underwater mountain ranges, often formed by volcanic activity, which appears to be the case on Ben's island. So it is doubtful that this reflects any early continent formation.

But there are things that trouble me. As background, let's use the Hawaiian islands as a model. The islands were formed long ago by volcanic activity. Having no connection to other land masses, the flora and fauna developed independently. For centuries, it was inhabited only by insects and birds. There are hundreds of species indiginous only to Hawaii. The polynesians were the first to find the islands and brought other mammals with them, like pigs and the vermon stowaways on rafts (mice, rats, etc.). Other micro-organisms and insects migrated also. Over the years, different plants and animals were brought to this delicate eco-system. Remember that the Galopogos (sp?) islands have unique eco-systems specifically because of their lack of outside influences.

So what's troubling me? There is nothing unique to the eco-system of the island. The tropical fruits are common (mangoes, papayas). The poisonous spider was well known to the H.S. science teacher. He was collecting rare things, but you would think that he would be going apesh*t about all the undiscovered species. There is wild boar on the island. The identifiable churping frog that annoys Sawyer. The sea food they eat is common for the tropics. Jin can identify the eatable sea urchins.

So it appears that the island has been visited by potentially many cultures bringing things like pigs, etc.

As an aside, is it just me or does anyone else find it troubling that the island seems to lack any bird population, which normally florishes on a tropical island like this? Or am I just overlooking it?

Sorry for the rambling.

hmm nice.... but my question issss:::::

if ben told the others to go to the temple, where is it on the map??? hmm????

missjulie
02-15-2008, 03:26 AM
Geology was the only thing from college I remembered! As soon as I saw that polar bear skelly and then I saw the map and I was like OMG! I reeeeallly hope the topography is accurate! Then I might be right!!

On the note of the temple... the map was compiled by Lost fans using solely the show as a reference and since there's really been no information about the temple except the verbal comment and the foot (maaaybe) they can't guage where it would be. I think.

What if the temple isn't on the island?? Not in the water like the hydra/looking glass either?
