Ok. I just watched this episode for the first time tonight. Thanks to ABC`s repeat tonight.
Anyhow. About the mysterous group who attacked our island bound Losties. I couldn`t realy get a good look at the uniforms they where wearing. But they did seem like DI type of clothing and wepondry. What are your thoughts as to who they are? and no spoilers please. Just educated gusses.

The arrow station and being attacked by flaming arrows isnt a coincedece to me. Were they part of DI that is for defense? If so they werent very good if they were killed off by Ben and his gas bomb.

I believe they are Dharma. It seems that there is much more to the Dharma Initiative than we ever knew, and that they had an entire defensive station called the Arrow means they were doing more than just science experiments.
Plus, we all know how well equipped Dharma seemed to be with all their weaponry. It had to be there for a reason.

It makes all kinds of sense that the attacking group to be DI members. I think they where part of the Arrow station. The reason we never see any films on the Arrow was because Dr. Candle never finished it due to the events that accured in the Orchid as we saw in episode "Because you left" Hmmm Could Ethan have once been a part of the DI? Like maybe associated with the Arrow station. That would explain his hostile aproach to Locke. More likely he was with the " Others" always. Just a thought. though.

My assumption was that the group who captured Sawyer and Juliet, and threatened cut of Juliet's hand were a part of the DI. As it has been said, there is more to the DI than we know. We all saw how much weaponry they had stashed in the Swan's armory. It would make sense that the DI would have military looking groups patrolling the Island.
I think the flaming arrows were fired by the original "hostiles" of the Island. They found a strange group of people on the Island, our survivors, and attacked them. Locke killing one of the hand cutters could have triggered a war between the DI and the hostiles.

maybe i'm boring but i just thought they were the DI too.
There's a link in one of the other forums (The Hostiles are...) to a you tube clip....Juliette says the people attacking them are others - but that could be others in comparision to the losties, which could be old DI. I think they are old DI from the same time the orchid station was being built

The original "hostiles" and the others are the same. I think that the Jones and company crew that had Juliet and Sawyer were circa 1940's or 1950's military. The Arrow Station contained a foot locker where they found army blankets, the pocket knife that Ana Lucia used to kill Goodwin, a glass eye, etc. I am not saying that the foot locker came from that time period but it is possible.
And yes, the rifle was an M1A, which were used by the Others.
