I was pretty sure I understood the concept of timing and flashfowards through the season premier. Then I spoke to someone confused and sure enough I became confused myself. here is the question:
The events taking place in the real world with the 06/Ben are taking place 3 years after they are rescued. However the events on the island are taking place imediately following their rescue. Therefore the scenes of the 06 are flashforwards, or the scenes on the island are now flashbacks (since Locke is dead)? I don't know if this makes a large difference but it may help in explaining some time nuances.
anyone else?

I was kind of thinking the same thing. The Oceanic remnants left on the island started time jumping once the island disappeared. The question is for how long! Because, as you pointed out, the events with the O6 are about 3 years later. So what has transpired with the OR (Oceanic Remnants as I like to call them) in those 3+ years?????
I suppose it all really depends on what your time baseline is. If you think the time with the OR is your baseline reference, then all of the stuff with the O6 is flash forwarding. Conversely, if your baseline reference is with the O6 then all of the events dealing with the OR are flashbacks!

They are in two different places in spacetime. The island is bouncing back and forth in spacetime. The 06 are in the real world and are unaffected by the time shifting. Apples and bannanas.
wait, is it the people (on the island) or the island that's jumping through time or space or some combination of those? I though Farraday said it was the people moving through time (or i misheard)? here's my assessment - please shoot holes in it:
1. either the island, or the people, or both, are definitely moving through time.
2. the island and the people are definitely moving through space. if the island didn't move through space and only through time, it would still be findable no matter what time it jumped to, which defeats the purpose of moving the island, so the island must be moving through space. the people have to be moving through space in the exact same way as the island or they would end up in the ocean.
3. getting back to #1 - consider that the island is moving through time and space. then a) either the people are moving through time differently than the island, or b) the people are not moving through time and only moving through space along with the island. if a is true, i don't know how it can be guaranteed that the O6 will be able to go back to the island and see everyone who was left on the island if they're jumping through time, so i'm leaning towards this conclusion - the island is moving through space and time, and i think the people on the island are only moving through space but maintaining the same time with the outside world. but this conflicts with what i think i heard daniel say. but of course it's a magical island so anything is possible.
on a side note, what Daniel said about not being able to change history matches up with what Desmond said, which was something to the effect of "no matter what i do, you're gonna die Charlie", so we can see what time does to maintain one and only one history
