Let's start with basics:
1. Rousseau allegedly left a message on a loop from the radio station.
2. According to Shannon the message says something like: "It killed them all. Help us."
Let's take the first and most obvious point: The message is supposedly running on a loop. If this is true why the variations? If you listen closely, the message changes every iteration. Why? Loops by definition are the same thing over and over. Does this have to do with different time loops/jumps by the Island? Different "iterations" of Rousseau? Or is it simply a continuity error? With something that big I doubt it.
Let's take the second point: Shannon clearly tells Boone she's no wiz at French, but rather a novice. Luckily for the rest of us, I speak French fluently and can therefore translate literally word for word. I don't have a transcript with me, but I did notice some things when I watched the pilot episode over again. The message says "Il les a tue tous" which Shannon translates to, "It killed them all". The correct translation is not "it" but rather "he". "He killed them all". Who is this he? Ben? Someone from Dharma? Or again, is this simply a translation error?
Secondly the message also has untranslated sentence which says, "Je vais essaye d'aller jusque au rocher noire" which translated means, "I'm going to try to go to the Black Rock". Why is Rousseau trying to get to an old ship? Especially since it involves going through the so called, "Dark Territory". Is there some property of the Black Rock which interested her team? This cannot be an error because it is specifically included in the message, though it was never translated by Shannon. "I'm going to try to go to the Black Rock"....
Hope you enjoyed this look at this aspect of the Pilot. I think the Season One premiere holds a lot of secrets and we are barely scratching the surface.
