Something that sparked in my mind while I was working. Not much proof to it but i'll give it a go.

Let's start with refreshing on the rules of destiny and trime travel in the show. Ms Hawking makes lays the law down to Des about this time travel stuff, and how you can't change the future. The man in the red shoes is going to die. Even if Ms Hawkings saves him this time, the man is going to die. The universe has a way of course correcting when things don't go as planned. This brings up an interesting point. Yes the univers course corrects, but the future does still change if the course doesn't go as planned. The big picture doesn't always change, but details do change; and if you change enough details perhaps the big picture may change as well.

Let's take Charlie and Des as an example. No matter how many times Des saved Charlie's life, Des new that Charlie would die sometime. There was no stopping it. However, if Des had not saved Charlie the first, or second, or third time, Charlie would not have been there to swim down to the station and discover that it's "not pen's boat".
Now if Charlie did die in one of the other incidents, then the universe probably would have corrected itself and someone else prob would have discovered that it's not pen's boat. But then that person might have died in the station which would set a whole new series of course corrections! And a series of small corrections could eventually cause a huge history changing correction! The big question in my mind is: what is the universe correcting exactly? Is is correcting the fact that someone did or didn't DIE? Or is it trying to correct the path of history because of actions taken by individuals? Or what?!

With that in mind let us observe something about the course correcting. In order for the course correcting to take place something, or someone, must temoporarily alter a course of events destined to happen. That something or someone is an opposing force the to plans of the "universe". Looking back at our Charlie/Des example, Des could be identified as the opposing force in the situation. So... where else have we seen or heard of opposing forces taking their toll on the universe's plans?

Let's start with an obvious one... Michael/"the Island". Michael was allowed to leave the Island after he succesfully delivered the names on the list given to him. Shortly after leaving the Island he revealed to his son Walt (very interesting and promising character) that he killed libby and anna lucia in the process. We're not totally sure what happened after that, but eventually michael comes to a suicidal state of mind and attempts to kill himself several times. Tom (Mr. Friendly) explains to Michael, and the viewers of the show, that the Island is keeping him alive, he has work to do. I would see this as another example of the opposing forces on the universe. But the question is who is the opposing force? hmmm... chew on that one for a while.

Another example, but this one is a little less obvious to recognize: Charles Widmore/"the Island". This example is not written in stone, but from dialogue between Widmore and Ben we can deduct that Widmore is similar case to that of Michael. When Ben visits Widmore, and disturbs him in his sleep, Widmore declares that they both know Ben isn't here to kill Widmore. The way the Widmore confidently declares this would give me the impression that the island may be protecting Widmore from death, just as it protected Michael. Either that or Widmore can't die, or Ben doesn't have the means or skill to kill Widmore (which is highly unlikely considering Ben excels at getting what he wants). This sparks another question... Why would the island protect Widmore?! chew on that one too.

(This is where things switch from an analyzation to a theorization)

Fourth, and personally i think the biggest, example: Locke/"the Iland". John Locke is an interesting man with an even more interesting past. It safe to say that Locke should be dead. There have been numerous occasions that Locke has survived life threatening events miraculously; the biggest being his fall from the building that Anothy Cooper pushes him off of. At first glance Locke seems like a guy with just bad luck. It wasn't until the conversation that Locke had with Abadon that our view was directed away from "unlucky" to "miraculous" and "special".

There are two ways that you can take the oustanding events that Locke has survived through. First, and most common, it is widely excepted that Locke these are just examples of Locke being "special" (what in the world does that mean?!), having special abilities, and having a great destiny that set's him apart from the rest of losties, and pretty much all of man kind; and there is certainly validity to that statement. The second view is one that I would propose might be more accurate. The first view is probably correct, but I would submit that it is incomplete. Could it be possbile that Locke by himself is nothing more than an ordinary man. BUT he has a destiny and a path to travel, and in order to travel that path he needs outside help, powerfull help, universe altering help, miraculous help,... Island help.

What if Locke was supposed to die, and is supposed to die? But there is an opposing force keeping him alive and altering the universe's path so it complies with that opposing forces will. Just as Desmond was the opposing force for Charlie, there also may be an opposing force keeping Locke alive until he can "discover that it's not pennelope's boat"? The first thought that comes to mind is the Island is the opposing force. But i think this is too simple of a mindset. I believe the island is merely the residence of the opposing force. I think there is something much more powerful functioning out of the Island.

Opposing forces. Something Opposing the universe in an effort to accomplish it's own will. Eternal struggle? Island vs Universe Destiny?

sorry for all the spelling and gramatical errors. I wrote this very quickly.
