This is my first post and theory.
First - Richard doesn't age.
Second - they speak latin.
Could he be Gaius Cassius Longinus, the Roman Centurian that pierced the side of Christ and was cursed to walk the earth for eternity?
Just a thought.
What does everyone think?

what exactly do you mean? are you referring to the one who pierced his side with the spear? or the one who physically hammered him to the cross?
Also, where does this thing about him being cursed to walk the Earth forever come from? I know it's not the Bible.
so, the Romans spoke Latin?

Yes, that would be the spearhead of Longinus or spear of Christ, in the side. It's Catholicism. Yes, the Romans spoke Latin.

Actually the average Roman soldier would not have spoke Latin - or at least not proper Latin. They would have spoken the Vulgate, a kind of Latin creole that eventually evolved into Italian. Latin was spoken by the upper classes and army officiers. On the other hand any soldier in the Roman army could understand Latin - at least well enough to follow orders and some would have spoken decent Latin just as some Haitians speak 'proper French' and some Jamaicans speak 'the Kings's English.'

Since the topic is sorta latin I'll just throw this into the mix. In latin Richard is "Uber" which basically means "fertile, productive, abundant and rich". In german it could mean "super", "above all", etc. In modern times it's been used to describe a person that is at the top of their game, someone who can't be beat such as "Uber-Villain"
Alpert is a german and dutch variant of the german name Albert which means "royal, noble, bright and famous"
Combine all of that and Richard Alpert = One badass dude.

Heres another explination of his name.
Back in the late 50's early 60's there was a Richard Alpert who worked at Harvard in the social relations and psychology. There he was most famous for his work with "magic mushrooms" and the creation of LSD with Timothy Leary. After being dismissed from Harvard, he travelled to India learning about mantras, asanas and working with beads(japa mala are strings of 108 beads used in prayer and meditation). After taking on a guru Alpert was given the name "Ram Dass" which means "servant of God". As Ram Dass he is most associated with the Hindu spiritual figure Hunaman, who is famous for leading an army of monkies and bears against the demon king Ravana.
Ram Dass created the Hanuman foundation which developed projects designed to help incarcerated inmates grow spiritually and provide a support structure for conscious and dying.
One of Ram Dass's more famouse writings teaches the Harmony of all people and religions.
Ram Dass's Guru, Maharaj-ji Maharaj-ji, is believed to be by many of his followers as the reincarnation of Hanuman. Hanuman, known as the breath of God, is the ultimate symbol of service to God. His only desire is to serve God and doing so will go to any length and conquor any obstacle including carrying an entire mountain through the sky and leaping over an ocean
If I had to put my money on it I would say that Jacob is Hanuman leading an army of monkies (non-enlightened man) and bears(the polar bears) against the demon king, Widmore.
the island is the hanuman foundation, a jail or alcatraz of sorts were extrordinary people who have "lost" their path and "good natured" criminals are brought to receive spiritual atonement and either join the army against evil or die.
Alpert is an immortal and ageless Ram Das or servant of god, a disciple of Hanuman, sent to be the spiritual leader of this army(the others), oversee the "foundation" and create a utopian society.

I remember Richard Alpert aka Ram Dass. He's still alive but in pretty bad health. I was going to mention him but I figured someone else would eventually.

right!!! Have you read the book? It's interesting how Ram Dass doesn't seem to follow one religion but many....specially with the fact there is a strong theme of faith in this show but not necessarily catering to one particular religion. It's actually an interesting book overall but yes, i bought it purely for LOST reasons lol

Very good theory. Also could tie in with "Hanso Foundation". Just as in Judeo-Christian philosophy, perhaps there are "angels"-beings not human and not god that can be messengers, never age, and travel through time. These are spirits of the Island. Richard can be one-any thoughts?

After watching the Lost Experience Racheal Blake videos Im convinced that the evil force is not Widmore but Dr. Thomas Mittlewerk from the Hanso Foundation. Im not sure where that puts Widmore in all of this.
Im starting to think that maybe Widmore isnt as bad as we are to believe.
Im leaning toward the belief that Widmore and Hawkings may be the "Adam and Eve" in the caves. The island is the Garden of Eden and the Dharma initiavtive is the presence of evil. I believe that DI is on the island looking to harness the islands powers and become immortal. At some point, like the serpent convinced Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, Hawkings and Widmore were enticed into taking part in something forbidden and, like Adam and Eve and the Garden of eden, they were banished from the island. They spend the rest of their lives in shame trying to return to the island. they finally make it back and either die in the caves or are placed there after death.

After tonite's episode w/ the statue and all the talk about Egyptian images, is it possible the masks are too?
