I just want to start off by saying that Lost is one of the greatest TV shows I have ever seen. It's a show that never seems to lose your attention, although it may be slow at times, it never disappoints.
That being said, I heard that Lost is ending after season seven. I know that everything must come to an end, but i wish Lost could stay around forever. Just because there will never be a show this intriguing again, a show that makes us question it and we learn new things just by watching it. It also makes us look at own lives and wonder about our destinies, and if everything really does connect in some way.
I just wanted to say this because after the final episode of Lost airs, we will probably never see anything like it again.

AW, now there you go, making me all weepy again...
We all share your enthusiasm and love for LOST.
We will truly miss it when it's over.
Don't you think it'd be wonderful if they continued it in another form with what happened AFTER lost??? Spinoffs usually aren't good, but this is such an exceptional show, just maybe.....

Hello Destiny, Hopefully when Lost does end, after season 6, it will be an end that we will all be content with..and I believe it will be. Such a great show. Theres nothing worse than a really good show going downhill because its run its course and the writers are grasping for ideas. I think we will all be a little sad, but its better to have loved Lost and lost than never to have loved Lost at all. (where did that come from??)

During the ABC podcasts, the writers like to refer to season 7 as the Zombie Season! :):D --- I'm sure I'd watch it even if they did have a zombie or two. :o
after season seven

There's no need to worry; I'll be making a Lost movie and will put it in segments on youtube. It'll be using clips from the show, and it'll be a comedy, but it'll still be good. It'll also be oldschool in that it'll be in black and white and will be silent.

Obviously a screen will come up with the caption "Whoosh." Same for the dialogue. ;/

Although I will miss the show when it ends and am not really looking forward to it ending, I have to say that there is probably some very good reasons behind its pre-announced ending.
The first, the characters, since they are involved with time travel and the actual show spans over quite a few years they know they are most likely not going to pull off the "ageless" thing that Richard has pulled off so far. In addition to that dilemma, people's contracts run out and stuff happens. Most Lost fans are incredibly smart and incredibly invested in their characters and in the details of those characters so if Sawyer all of a sudden gets a gut in a couple of years and has to shoot a "timeless" scene or even a "flashback" scene he may not be able to pull it off four or five years from now and Lost relies heavily upon "flashback" scenes and the whole time travel thing which would force their characters to stay a certain age for a certain period of time. We aren't like other fans we would notice that Desmond is losing his hair from one scene to the next or if Sun's face was getting worn with time.
The second reason may be that the Lost writers are not only smart but artists of integrity. It could very well be that they are not going to want to beat a good horse to death (as many other good shows have). They may want to maintain the integrity of the show/their art by not wearing it down to the point where it becomes a watered down version of what was once a very innovative and creative show. I can only compare this to (and, people are going to want to smack me for this, I know) a great little movie called "The Matrix". The first one had a great story, new camera/film techniques, which made it not only smart but visually stunning. It had so much success they went on with Matrix II and Matrix III the sequels. But that movie didn't NEED a sequel. It stood on its own right and quite frankly many people saw the sequels as a watered down attempt which actually moved them towards the matrix of commercialness ( in other words, they did it for the money, relying not on a strong story but on action scenes, special effects and taking the risk of losing the story for the sake of selling a product) which they seemed to preach against in the original movie (which is why the original movie was so successful). I mean, think about it, when people talk about that trilogy, it is the first movie and the incredible original concept of the first movie that always gets mentioned not the sequels. I think the Lost writers/producers are doing the right thing, by keeping their artistic integrity intact and not letting their work get watered down just to make an extra buck.
And, you never know, the announcement of the ending of Lost after Season 6 might just be an incredible marketing ploy to keep you watching. (I doubt it but it IS a possibility.) Kind of like when your favorite band announces it is going to be their "last" tour so they get a sold out show and then announce a few more years down the line that they decided to have another tour. Well, it hasn't slipped my mind that this might be what they are doing.
Not only does announcing Season 6 to be the end of Lost get you more interested because it creates a bit of media hype (I mean, who doesn't want to see the most of an old friend before they leave) but it also does what seems to be a much needed thing in the "Lost" community, it allows for people to anticipate closure.
Anticipating closure does two things.
First, it gives those out there (like one of the posters here I think we all remember) who are getting frustrated with all the questions left to be answered sort of a "promise" to answer them within a certain period of time which keeps them interested. (Kind of like the difference between driving through a dark tunnel never knowing where it will end and driving through a tunnel where you can see the light at the end of it.)
The next thing it does is allow for an extra layer of gratitude if they decide to continue on with an additional season or if they decide to expand/break off into another show. Instead of the fans saying with exhaustion, "Not ANOTHER Lost. It really is getting drawn out and old." They are going to be saying," Oh, another Lost! That's so awesome!"
No matter how it turns out, one thing is for sure, the creators of Lost know exactly what they are doing.

This is pure speculation, but I remember talk during the first two seasons of Lost that the producers really only wanted to make the show 2 or 3 seasons long. But due to the amazing popularity of the show, ABC extended it for extra seasons.
The result was a season 2 that spent too much time inside the hatch and a season 3 that began adding too many extra elements and convoluted extra storylines (Nikki and Paulo for instance). The show started losing fans because the show seemed to be going off track (the start of season 3 was terrible, in my opinion) and toward the end of that season they signed a contract to end the show after season 6.
In my opinion, this was the absolute best decision they ever made. Season 4 was incredible because they had a target end date and didn't have to add clutter simply for the sake of extending the show, and now season 5 looks to be better. Ever since the last few episode of season 3 and onward, the show had a dramatic turn around and has a clear focus once again - and it's all because of this target end date.
