great question. jacob seems to be at the top of the totem pole as far as richard, ben and locke are concerned. who does widmore and hawking answer to? also, off the island ben seems to be looking to hawking for direction, and jack is looking to ben to get back to the island.

Richard follows a "chain of command." If we go with the theory that Richard is older than old, that he goes back to Egyptian or Roman times, is it possible that Richard was the second in command in an army-type group with Jacob as the leader? Richard has stuck by him all this time out of loyalty, and Jacob has used whatever powers he acquired thanks to the island to keep Richard young and searching for a way to save him (Jacob). So Jacob has been searching for a savior for a very long time.

Maybe he is still looking for him over seperate dimensions and realities and every reality Chuck chases the devil into, he round houses the Dimension out of the existence.
