Okay, so I gather that the Hostiles are wearing military uniforms stolen from the 18 soldiers that were found on the island. And they're using their camp, and their weapons.

Do we think these Hostiles have always been on the island or were they recruited by Richard in the same was Juliette was? Presumably we can deduce they arrived later on due to the English accents. Would Widmore have stayed the same age we see him in 1954 had he not left the island for some reason?

Also; it's interesting how the Others/Hostiles have a history of disguising themselves as something totally different. In 1954 they disguise themselves as Soldiers, and in 2004 they disguised themselves as primative barbarian types.

Finally, does anyone have a theory on why Richard appeared clean cut and tidy in 1954, then looked more scraggly with longer hair when he met young Ben, before returning to his clean cut look later on? I'd say that has was merely in diguise when he met Ben, but this doesn't account for the hair. Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure that all the Hostiles would had to have been brought to the island at some point, since children that are conceived on island don't survive.
As for Richard's long hair I think that maybe Dharma was winning the war on the Hostiles. Richard might be clean cut in 54 because he's traveling to and from the island regularly. Possibly in the 70's the Hostiles were cut off by Dharma from wherever on the island moves you. So with no reason to look presentable for the main land, Richard let himself go.

That's great, I never thought of that one.

You could be right about this, but we don't know for sure when the fretility problems began on the Island. There could have been a time in the Island's early existance that children were born there.

In the premiere episode Dr. Chang and his wife had a very young baby with them on the Island. It is possible they traveled to the Island with the young baby in tow, but it seems bringing a child that young to the Island could be dangerous.

You're right. I had always thought that when Richard told Locke that Ben was wasting time on fertility problems he was wasting time because it had always happened.
But Richard might have felt that way because he knew what was going to happen, and that things would go back to before the fertility problems.
