For anyone who is a fan, or who has read Arthurian lit, I noticed something in the last episode. Richard has had a hand in all 'leaders' of the island. There are a few things about him that are strikingly similar to Merlin. He lives backward in time (never aging). He lays a challenge to 'prove' a leader is worthy. Each leader has had a sword-in-the-stone style task to prove themselves. And none of the leaders has done after losing power. They are put off the island, ala Arthur going to Avalon.
Locke had to pick an item that was his. He chose the knife. This confirmed to Richard that Locke had a future on the island.
Ben Linus wanted to escape, and ran into Richard, who then gave over a task to 'free' him.
Widmore seems to be under Richard's charge. I am sure that his 'task' will be revealed.
All three made it off the island. The only one dead is Locke (and that is in dispute). All are seeking control, and the only one who seems to grant it is Richard.
Any thoughts, arguements or additions? All are welcome
