From the conflicts and the latest series many have come to believe that the "hatch" was built around the H bomb buried in concrete.
Therefore I think that perhaps Widmore owns The Dharma Institute and therefore knew about some of the island's properties before the DI arrived in the 70s.
The hotheaded young man seems to have been in a conflict with Richard. Perhaps after leaving (or being chucked off) the island, he returned the businessman to find out more about the island.
Ben's antics destroyed the DI (from inside) and so Widmore now hates him for the downfall of his business
