Hi as a big fan of this character I am wondering if anyone can give me a few answers of the things I have wondered.

Mr. Eko was played by Adewale Akinnouye Agbaje. He died at the hand of the smoke monster in Season 3.

What I know is Adewale's parents both died around this time and he asked the Lost writer's to kill him off as he wanted to work on a film about their lives. So as it happened he died in Season 3 by the smoke monster.

Now their a few things my curiosity cannot seem to break and wondering if perhaps anyone can give some insight.

First, I recall in season 2, Eko orders Charlie to take him to the plane where he found the statue of the virgin mary. Along the way Eko encounters the smoke monster, stares at it directly for about 15 seconds and then the smoke monster turns around and leaves as if it is afraid of Eko or that there is something about him that draws it away.

Now what I am wondering is....was their something that the writer's had in store for Eko??? I mean one moment the smoke monster is afraid of him then the next it kills him, to me this is a product of Adewale asking to be written off and not what the writer's had intended, so as it is an unsatisfying ending to Eko without the issue of the smoke monster running away from him ever being brought up again.

Another thing about him I was wondering was his Church. I remember he was building it then he went to the hatch...Charlie started trying to build it and then that was it, no mention of the Church again. Another issue ending without satisfactory.

Its probably a stretch but does anyone know anything about what the writer's had intended for Adewale's character??

Being one of if not my favourite character of Lost its very unsatisfying seeing how it all played out. It all came to mind as I am re-watching 1-4 while watching the new 5's. Any feedback would be appreciated thanks.

I wasn't happy about the untimely death of Eko either. Maybe someone else can shed some light on why. As for the church, I think it got built anyway. In "The Lie" when Bernard is frantically looking for Rose and she comes running up to him, he ask where she was and she says she was at church.

There's the frame of the church still standing, they show it in a few episodes.

If you watch the scene where the black smoke first confronts Mr. Eko, you will notice several things if you scroll through frame by frame. The smoke was looking at Mr. Eko and "judging" him in a sense. You will see as you go through frame by frame, Mr. Eko and his brother at childhood, a nun or possibly Mr. Eko's mother, a church, and Jesus Christ on the cross. I haven't watched this scene for a while but I'm sure there is more, I just don't recall all of it at this moment. You should check it out, it is insightful. Remember, frame by frame. The black smoke is said to be the Angel of Death by some.

Ok I understand this talk about the smoke monster judging him and it has all his images of his past. But that still doesn't explain to me why at one point it sees it fit to leave him but then later on decide to deceive him as Yemi and kill him, its not like he did anything to change the smoke monsters mind.

I feel that this sudden change is a very unsatisfactory way of playing out the Eko character because Adewale asked to written out. I feel that this death is just a product of that, as you can see the flaw in it, no real explanation just dies. Everything else in the show is linked or connected and you always find out why something happened this way or that way...its the Lost way of doing things.

All I really want to know is if anyone has any idea on what Eko's role may have meant to be played out as....this first incident of Eko and the Smoke Monster suggests that he was very important in some way. Its just to satisfy my own curiosity as to what he may have been meant to do on the Island had he not asked to be written off the show.

Ecko's death was used as away to help guide John Locke. They buried Ecko in the exact spot that he died, and when Locke was driving his stick in the ground noticed "Open your eyes and look to the north, John 3:something or other. Locke used the number of the bible passage and headed north on it. He found the Flame, which led him to the barracks, which lead him to where he is now.

So even though Ecko was written off his death did have a very important role.

As for Smokie, I dont' know. We've seen Locke stare off with it and it left him alone, then tried to drag him into a hole in the ground. I think Smokie has social problems.

I think it's obvious Eko died because he did not confess or ask for forgiveness.

I believe that the smoke monster had a choice of which to use as a pawn: Locke or Eko. Eko turned out to have the "wrong" state of mind and thus, was useless to it.

I do agree though that the show would have been better if Eko hadn't died.

The actor will be a part of the GI Joe movie coming out this summer. He landed the role shortly after leaving LOST.
