Spinal surgery anyone?

So if Ben is a world traveler with wads of cash, why didn't he just go off the island and have his surgery?

my reason is that he would need to have insurance and fill out paperwork etc...and have follow up check ups too. he may have fake passports for the travelling but are all the other required documents faked aswell?

I was wondering the same thing. I can only assume that he has been living "off the grid" ( in more ways than one ) and he wants to keep it that way. An inpatient stay at major hospital could be risky if people are after him. Plus there would be a DNA trail. Jack is an ace surgeon and healing takes place at accelerated rate on the island.
Just throwing stuff to the wall and seeing if it sticks.

Also he needed a way to get Jack to stay with them too and get him in their "good graces" so to speak....why would Ben go off the island and risk being caught just to have surgery when low and behold a spinal surgeon crashes on the island the day he finds out he needs surgery?

also - if he left the island and there is the whol time dfference - would that not speed up the growth of the tumor? and you cant just nip into the hospital and get it taken out!!

Ben didn't go off the island because he needed to have Jack operate on him to pull Jack in in some psychological way. He has studied everyone and seems
to know how to psyche them out. Jack makes connections with the people he has "saved" and that gives a manipulator like Ben a very good card to play in the future. It may not always be a healthy link but it is a link nevertheless. Jack would have had a very hard time letting Ben die and Ben knew it. Jack turned in his own father for operating on a woman when he was totally blasted resulting in her death.Ben is way too savy to what motivates people.That seems to have worked for him so far. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Bne may have known at that time that people were looking for him and coudln't risk going back. The four are looking for be so it might be that same people. Just a thought.
