Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm predicting that Daniel is lying about not being able to do anything that hasn't been done.
His intent? Who knows. Maybe for something sneaky, most likely just because he thinks that if someone doesn't fully understand what they're tampering with in the past that it may cause some huge problems.
Daniel says that if something didn't happen the first time then it can't when they go back in time.
This just doesn't make sense at all. It would have to mean that the FIRST time history happened, Jin met Rousseau, before he had ever been to the island. Meaning, that the effect happened before the cause. Impossible.
It's as big or bigger of a paradox that someone exists in a place or time they're not supposed to exist in in the first place, as it is to interact with somebody or something you "didn't the first time."
I'm aware that this means that they can change the future and of course there are logical problems with this, but far less than the other option. It's LOST, you can create some paradoxes if you want.
Remember, they're time-traveling, which in itself, I would consider to be quite a paradox.
This is probably a stupid theory, but I've been thinking that towards the end of the series somebody will do something to prevent 815 from finding the island, and that will lead to the 815 flight that was found at the bottom of the ocean.
