Alot of you have been theorizing whether or not all these "flashes" currently taking place have lead to Widmore suddenly finding that hes got a few new "memories" floating around that bald head of his similar to Desmond suddenly waking up with the "memory" of having met Daniel Faraday outside the Swan hatch door...
...I think this is your answer...

Lets revisit that oh so memorable encounter between Ben and Widmore that took place at the very end of "A Shape of Things to Come". Here is part of the transcript for that particular scene...

Widmore: I wondered when you were gonna show up. I see youve been getting more sun.

Ben: Iraq is lovely this time of year. When did you start sleeping with a bottle of scotch by the bed?

Widmore: WHEN THE NIGHTMARES STARTED

This conversation clearly implies that to Ben at least Widmores heavy late night drinking binges are a new phenomina...theyve only began recently...and it also shows that whatever Charles is dreaming about its terrifying enough to really shake the normally cool as a cucumber brit...so...???

When I first watched that scene I remember asking myself..."Why is Widmore starting to have dreams NOW?"...we now know that he was on the Island some 50 years ago and that hes been off it looking to get back for at least 20...so WHY WHY WHY after 20 years of searching for the Island and doing everything in his power to get back is he only starting to have dreams NOW? What gives??? I think the answer is that just as in Desmonds case these dreams or "memories" are being triggered now because as he is lying asleep in his lavish penthouse apartment the Island is on its skip trip through time...as he sleeps the past is being changed or altered...thus the new "memories"!!! Ideas? Thoughts???

What I dont understand is if the Island is able to keep you from dieing, than how come it cant keep people from coming to the Island that it knows are going to hurt it? It seems Widmore had the same arrogant cocky attitude on the Island as he does off it. maybe that is why he is no longer on it.

If they are "new" memories, wouldn't that mean Widmore's past has been changed? One's mind should be able to cope with an event one may have forgotten, but one's mind would have difficulty coping with new memories that are overwriting the original memories if that's what is going on.

you really that sure about that vanni...? the quotes i took were directly from a transcript found on lostpedia, not to mention the fact that Ben had just been in Iraq spying on/recruiting Sayid. "Your rock is lovely this time of year" would indicate the Island has seasons...your saying the Island has a winter season weve yet to see??? So THATS what the polar bears are doing there! Lol.

It is the coming together of the two timelines. Widmore's real world timeline like when Ben visits in the middle of the night, and the islands timeline that is moving at a much different rate and bouncing back and forth through time. I have said before that when Desmond has the "dream" about Dan telling him to visit his mother in 2007, it is when in island time, Dan has just visited him. Two different timelines occuring at the same time. That was a very good pick up by you with Widmore's nightmares. Indeed, they were happening in 2007 real world time, and back in 1954 and more on island time, concurently. Two timelines at the same time. I've been saying this...
Great job!

Somone once said to me. The island needed A cold drink of water it whent for the cold one and ended up with Jack instead. Which does seem logical. Jack has always been looked at as leader. When in actaulity. He was just the second pick since the cold one got away.

My point? Widmore is finaly having dreams or visions. Because the island can`t find the water again. So it settles with Charles. Perhaps Widmore is finaly ready to go back to the island because Jacob needs him or this unknown evil sinister force at work on the island is using him as he has the O6 and mislead Locke.

Oh my God, I hadn't thought of that! It really pays to watch the whole previous season again while in the middle of the current one, there's so much!

this theory is wrong, the onyl rreason desmond had the new memory was because he is different, " the rules dont apply" and unless the rules alos dont apply to widmore its not possible.

I always attributed Widmore's nightmares to the fact that he knew Alex had been killed and that Ben would be hunting him down. Keamy had broken the rules and Widmore knew it was wrong. He didn't seem shocked to see him show up, even in his bedroom in the middle of the night. It was almost as if he was expecting Ben to pay him a visit. I think that is why he was having nightmares.

If it were true that Widmore was afraid of Ben hunting him, why did he react so calmly when Ben showed up in the middle of the night. So, i don't believe that theory.

I think he had reconciled himself to the fact that he would be looking to seek revenge so he wasn't surprised to see him. He also wasn't afraid for his life because he knows Ben is bound by whatever these "rules" are.
