I was thinking that since the writers of Lost are using all this scientific theory this season, has anyone thought about the possibilities of Parallel Universes? If you understand the theory, then you know that there are an infinite number of possiblilites from each potential outcome of your life. Meaning, that there is a parallel universe where John McCain did win the election and there is a parallel universe where the earth was destroyed by the comet that killed the dinosaurs. This being the case, maybe the island's "skipping" is just a progression through other parallel universes, with some actually the same timeline because that parallel universe splits off at a different point in time.
Also, I find it curious that John Locke originally talks about MOVING the island, which would make you think that everyone that didn't go with the Losties on the first flash are actually still in the "present" but now in a different location. I mean, something had to happen to all of those left behind and that this Alpha Island must be the staging point for the O6/Ben/Walt/etc etc to get back to, unless more time new time travel is involved--this time involving all those other people.

Hrm... maybe in a parallel universe the Oceanic 815 plane did crash in the water (the "fake" plane at the bottom of the ocean). And maybe the island is present in all parallel universes?

You make a very valid point and I have posted about parallel universes before. I completely agree that it could be possible. The losties on the island are still in their present. They are wearing the same clothing, unlike when Desmond time jumped in both the helicopter and the freighter, not to mention when the Swan imploded. That is a major difference. That was why it was Desmond's consciousness that time jumped. In the case of the Losties I have been saying lately that the island is moving in time and that it is just dragging the losties along for the ride with it. I think I understand what you are saying about an Alpha type island but don't know if that is the case. I don't see how the 06 would use it to get back to the island in the parallel universe. I think it boils down to something so simple it's rediculous. The 06 must reach a particular area near where the island will be by the 70th hour and voila, there she is! Mrs. Hawking was using a Foucault Pendulum to determine the position of the island as it relates to the universe. In a nutshell, that's what it does. The calculations she was making on the blackboard were about probability, gravitational acceleration and I can't remember without my notes, sorry. But you get the picture. She was calculating the probability of where and when the island would reemerge in their time. So, in other words, she could come up with the safe passage coordinates that the 06 could use to return by a particular time. Now, the fact that these were probabilities could lead to some interesting episodes!
I like your idea and it is well thought out. It is also real scientific theory being considered by the scientific community right now. I believe it is from Stephen Hawking. He had said that the universe is so vast that it is not impossible to think that there are exact planets like our own where each possible outcome of events could occur. Something like that. I just think that right now we have too much information that points in another direction. That of two distinct timelines; real world time and island time and when the two collide.

I think Parrallel universes and stuff would be a bit much.

It would make for great sci-fi but I really think we are looking at two different timelines occuring simultaneously. Island time and real world time. Island time is really different than real world time.

But what decides what is the "real time"? There must be one, one in which all revolves around.

Time is a manmade calculation and it is based in theologic beliefs.
