View Full Version : Bomber's Notes - Episode 5 "This Place is Death"

Well, Bomber didn't get to watch the episode until this morning. My power was out all last night so I missed UNC/Duke and Lost. Talk about a bad night. Be that as it may, I just finished "This Place is Death" and whoa is there a lot of stuff to talk about today. Let's start with a short recap:

Recap:

- Jin & the Frenchies get attacked by Smokie. Its the most revealing attack so far, as it insinuates that Smokie can take over a person's body or their body's characteristics. (We kinda thought that last part)

- We've seen a Temple that Smokie might be based out of. (Ben's Temple, anyone?) NOTE: It would be surprising that Danielle wouldn't notice that the Temple Ben was sending her to was the one with Smokie, so I think they may still be separate places.

- Just before he catches one to the forehead, we learn that Smokie is protecting the funky Temple...interesing.

- Jin is reunited with John, Sawyer, & Co.

- The nosebleeds are continuing, now Sawyer's in on the fun.

- Charlotte reveals that she grew up on the Island, and that DAN told her if she came back she would die. (Trying to change the future?)

- We saw the first ever cracks in Ben's ability to control his emotions. His outburst on Sun and Jack in the van is the most telling aspect. It speaks to the seriousness of the situation. (He protected everyone...from who? Widmore?)

- RIP Charlotte

- John promises not to bring Sun back, goes down the rabbit hole, breaks his leg, runs into Christian (who is an enigma in and of himself) and finds the faith to turn the wheel.

- Anyone else start laughing when Christian said that he told John to turn the wheel, and not Ben, and that listening to Ben is a mistake?

- Oh, look, more surprises for Ben. Desmond is here. And he knows Eloise is Faraday's mother...oh crap. (Ben's face was priceless. His facade is failing.)

- Desmond recognizes Eloise, and they begin to prepare to go back to the Island minus Kate, Aaron, Sayid, Hurley, and Walt.

Now, some good info we got out of this one:

Smokie:
- So he protects the Temple, not the Island, and his abilities are even more expanded then before.
- He is the reason Danielle thought her team was sick. But they were not.
- Is it possible there are multiple Smokies? Each protecting a Temple on the Island? (Hence why some kill characters and others do not?)

Ben:
- Apparently he's been hard at work protecting the O6 from someone. (Abaddon, Widmore, anyone?)
- The direness of the situation seems to be wearing on Ben, and I think he's getting sick of having to convince the O6 and others to return to the Island to save everyone else.

Daniel:
- Nothing good seems to happen to him, does it?

Charlotte:
- Check that, it appears worse things have happened to poor Charlotte. (Rest in Peace)
- She revealed her youth on the Island. (Could she possibly still be Annie?)
- She ran into Dan as a youth. So Dan is really trying to change the past/future.

Jin:
- ...What did Charlotte say to him in Korean before she said "Don't bring her back" That seemed to change his whole demeanor towards bringing everyone back.
- Why would he want John to leave Sun behind? (Minus the obvious reasons)

Sayid:
- Now we know why Ben was trying to tranq him. Let us hope they succeed.

Desmond:
- Minus Penny and Charlie, Desmond arrives as Ben, Jack, and Sun do. Something about his statement "You're here to find Faraday's mother, too?" shock's Ben significantly. Its either, that he knows she's Faraday's mother, or that he knows ANYTHING pertaining to Eloise.

The Temple:
- So its got hieroglyphics on it, similar to the door in Ben's House. Could it be the Other's Temple? Sure, but its unlikely Danielle would've agree to travel there once she realized where they were going. And its HIGHLY unlikely she'd forget where that place was.

Be all means, feel free to add your own discussion/questions to the thread. This episode was very revealing and yet still has us loaded with questions. It was probably the best one so far this season.

Until Next Week,

Namaste

Yeah that was funny. But is Christian any more trustworthy than Ben?

- Oh, look, more surprises for Ben. Desmond is here. And he knows Eloise is Faraday's mother...oh crap. (Ben's face was priceless. His facade is failing.)

Desmond recognizes Eloise, and they begin to prepare to go back to the Island minus Kate, Aaron, Sayid, Hurley, and Walt.[/COLOR]
I don't get that. Both Ben and Hawking were very insistant that everybody had to go back, now all of a sudden it's no big deal.
Now, some good info we got out of this one:

Smokie:
- So he protects the Temple, not the Island, and his abilities are even more expanded then before.
- He is the reason Danielle thought her team was sick. But they were not
They may not have been ill but there was difinotely something wrong with them. Her husband tried to shoot her
- Is it possible there are multiple Smokies? Each protecting a Temple on the Island? (Hence why some kill characters and others do not?)

Ben:
- Apparently he's been hard at work protecting the O6 from someone. (Abaddon, Widmore, anyone?)

Daniel:
- Nothing good seems to happen to him, does it?

Charlotte:
- Check that, it appears worse things have happened to poor Charlotte. (Rest in Peace)
- She revealed her youth on the Island. (Could she possibly still be Annie?)
Not unless she went from brunette red heag(and not just her hair color)
- She ran into Dan as a youth. So Dan is really trying to change the past/future.

Jin:
- ...What did Charlotte say to him in Korean before she said "Don't bring her back" That seemed to change his whole demeanor towards bringing everyone back.
- Why would he want John to leave Sun behind? (Minus the obvious reasons)

Sayid:
- Now we know why Ben was trying to tranq him. Let us hope they succeed.

I think he realies something really wierd had to happen for Des to be looking for Faradays mother. (and why isn't she in Oxford?)
The Temple:

I dont think the smoke monster controls peoples bodies. think about it - the smoke monster is not able to be shot, it has enough strength to pull down the entire french team, to the point of ripping off a dudes arm. Then it turns around and is defeated by a 9 month pregnant woman? It is more likely the other french people became others and wanted her baby.

If you caught the re-air of last weeks episode with the pop-up info tabs, it says ben is a liar and all his actions are directly related to his own agenda.

ben could have been surprised to see desmond because he didnt now he was off the island, didnt know faraday's mom was hawking, or didnt realize desmond was in contact with widmore

Ben's reaction wasn't to seeing Desmond, it was to Desmond's comment in response to Ben's "Are you here to see Faraday's mother, too?"

- Danielle, while shooting at Jin says 'you're sick too... you're a carrier.'
(is this why smokie kills some, but takes over/influences others?)

- The name of the boat at slip 23 is "Illusion."
(a reference to the masquerade that the island has been pulling?)

- During the extended, repetitive flash, Miles says "it's not stopping!"

- Charlotte mentions knowing more about Carthage than Hannibal himself.
(does the road to the island go thru Tunisia?)

- Last, but not least... the Lost logo during the closing credits seems to be changing again. (First, it was just the island. Then the reflection of LA appeared. Then the city line is in the letters.)

Now it seems to becoming covered in a dark fog.

Just something to add about the hieroglyphics, in the podcast they mention that the hieroglyphics by the donkey wheel are symbolic of resurrection. and they are similar to the ones at the temple wall that smokey went into.

But is it fair to say Charlotte backtracked her way back?

- He is the reason Danielle thought her team was sick. But they were not.Robert was acting a little wierd, and it didn't help that he tried to shoot her.

I am, as we all are of course interested in how it will all end. I thought to myself this morning that it seems like the culmination of the series is coming soon and I realize that we have 29 episodes left. What the hell is going to happen.

I'm sure Ben was surprised, then very alarmed that Desmond was there for "Farraday's Mother." There are probably only two people who know who and where she is...Ben and Widmore. So Ben now knows that Desmond has had contact with Widmore and that he could have been tailed.

The plot thickens...And may I add that this season has been fantastic so far.

Ok, I have some comments on last nights episode (or this night if you, like me, are forced to download it as a torrent to watch it before easter or something thank you Swedish TV4 for being a bit out of time...). I'll pick up on Bombers notes...

- Charlotte reveals that she grew up on the Island, and that DAN told her if she came back she would die. (Trying to change the future?)

Miles made a very interesting comment in the S04 final ep (about 24:00-24:30 into it). Daniel convinces Charlotte that it is very important that she goes on the raft away from the island and she agrees. Miles thinks it is funny she wants to leave as she has spent so much time trying to get back to the island. What do you mean, she replies. Miles makes a face while saying What DO I mean? Does he know this out of his "I see dead people" abilities? His psychic abilities has been tuned down alot since his early appearances on the show. Or how is he connected to this? I have seen the theory of Miles as Dr Halliwax son but that would play out well in those circumstances. Just because they lived on the island doesn't mean they would recognize each other 20 years down the line. I know I wouldn't recognize any of my kindergarden friends...

- We saw the first ever cracks in Ben's ability to control his emotions. His outburst on Sun and Jack in the van is the most telling aspect. It speaks to the seriousness of the situation. (He protected everyone...from who? Widmore?)

His emotion control broke when he stabbed Keamy in the neck not caring about the faith of those on the freighter just to revenge his daughter. Also interesting is how Alex is his daughter as we all think she is Daniells daughter. And we have met the father who both got killed and had very little resemblance to Ben. I'll make a separate thread on this topic. Or accually I won't. Thought it over a bit more and I think Ben got Danielle's daughter early on and has made a strong connection to over the years. Just because it is not his biological daughter doesn't meen it is not his daughter... even if he stole her... it is just a tv show... then again it is not just a tv show...

Ben:
- Apparently he's been hard at work protecting the O6 from someone. (Abaddon, Widmore, anyone?)

Also a separate topic I will start from this answer. Could his work as keeping the O6 safe be "course correcting"? And could this "course correcting" be the reasons for the flashes on the island. Everytime Ben changes someones "faith" this will create some kind of counter reaction on the island...?

My thought on this was that Ben thinks he is "all that and then some". But he accually had no idea as of the fact that Eloise is Faraday's mom. So here comes Des with some stuff that totally changes "everything" in Ben's mind and pretty much pulls the rug from under his feet. There of the priceless face. I saw this as a key scene when Ben's leadership begun turn to failure.

Alex isn't Ben's real daughter. He took her from Rousseau. But he was emotional cuz the child he raised for 16 yrs was killed in front of him.

He probably didn't remember it because it hasn't happened yet. We saw in the first episode that he was in a dharma uniform working in the Orchid and are left to assume that we will find out how he got to be there.

Sorry about the confusion. Click on the pic below...it's the only one I could find...
At this point the city is a reflection in the water.
Before this, there was just water.
This season, the city is actually in the letters "LOST"

It comes at the end of the previews each week...

Sorry, i just had to say this somewhere!

Just saw episode 5, WOW what a great one! so much tension and suspense, i love lost!

I reckon that the bomb goes off and takes out the statue, leaving the four toed foot!? And maybe the four toed food is on the edge of the temple..., this may have already been suggested elsewhere. I have no evidence to back it up just a theory.
