I know I keep posting this, but I think after seeing Smokie in action, there are several valid points. Most of this comes from Islam, which I no little about. (But Sayid does) We've also been told by DL and CC that religion is suposed to be a key this season. I don't adhere 100% to the whole theory, but here are some of the points from the site:

But to clarify this. The original Djinn has nothing to do with the "american pop-culture-djinn" like we know him from Disney and so on. They are a several thousand years old myth! They don´t grant 3 wishes and don´t live in bottles. Genie is the English term for the Arabic جني/جن/جان (jinn). In pre-Islamic Arabian mythology and in Islam, a jinni (also "djinni" or "djini") is a member of the jinn (or "djinn"), a race of supernatural creatures.
The word "jinn" literally means anything which has the connotation of concealment, invisibility, seclusion and remoteness. In English it may be loosely translated as Ghost.
Djinns consist of smoke, steam or fire
Two thousand years before mankind was created, there were Jinn on the Earth, and they caused corruption on it and shed blood. Then Allah sent against them a troop of Angels who beat them and cast them away to islands in the seas.
Djinns are originally made to protect the paradise
Djinns live in dark, wet, muddy places and also in bushes, near ruins and deserts, especially in potholes best examples for this: the "Dark Territory" and the ruins
Djinns can cause, manipulate and even enter dreams and it´s said you can be lost forever if you follow them
Djinns can be summoned with the help of symbols. Maybe octagons?
Summoning a Djinn causes an incredible pain to the Djinn, so Djinns don´t like to work together with humans and sometimes they work against them
Djinns can interact with our world
An islamic savant said: djinns like to transform into snakes, horses, donkeys, camels, dogs, black cats, giants as well as humans but a djinn can´t keep his human form for a long time, after a certain time he has to change back to his original shape
