There is a giant struggle going on in Lost and I doubt very much if the actual parties to that struggle are the Dharma Initiative, the Hanso Corporation, or the Others although they are all doubtless parts of that struggle. Although Aliens may have been instrumental in 'making' the island - or at least making it special, I don't think they are around any more or they would have taken better care of the 'Frozen Donkey Wheel." We may be getting clues that what is going on is a kind of 4th Punic War. In the 3rd Punic War, in 146 BC, Rome destroyed Carthage killed tens of thousands and scattered many tens of thousands more. The Romans then sowed the fields with salt so nothing would ever grow there again. Carthage was in modern day Tunisia and there is a connection between Tunisia and the island. Charlotte found ancient artifacts from the Dharma Initiative in Tunisia including Polar Bear bones. When Ben left the island he landed in the Tunisian desert. There is some kind of wormhole between the island and Tunisia.
If this hypothesis is true then we have some idea who the players are. The Others speak Latin so maybe they are some how decended from the Romans. Charlotte was raised in the Dharma Initiative and knows 'more about Carthage than Hannibal,' which I suppose would make them the Carthaginians. Of course the other way around would make more sense. The Carthaginians escape through the wormhole and take refuge on the island learning Latin to know their enemy. They are pursued through the wormhole by the remnants of the Roman army who become as jealous of the island as they were of Carthage itself. The Romans (Dharma Initiative) then learn about Carthage to know their enemy.
This theory, of course provides no clue as to why some people - Richard - don't age and others such as Daniellle and Ben do.
