LOL...I'm just at the age where a woman gets hyper-sensitive! Truthfully, I was just trying to spread a little sunshine! :)

And to answer the original question (now that I've had my fun) I think we're supposed to assume that, since Des showed up at the church and they were led to Mrs. Hawking, that she is indeed Dan's Mom. I have been burned too many times with this show by making a$$umptions though so I understand your hesitation in believing it until she says, "I'm Eloise Hawking, Daniel's Mom".

You are no hag by any means. Okay enough flirting for the moment. What you said about Dez. showing up is what gave me the impression too. Two more questions come up though. Why do they have different last names? and why does she have an accent and not Faraday?

The last name is easy, she remarried. As for the accent he could have been raised and/or educated in America then gone to Oxford as a proffessor. But where does that monk we see her in the picture with come in? Is that the same monk that threw Des out of the monastery?

I was thinking about Hawking's station underneath the church. What if there's a station connected to Brother Cambell's monestary. Who knows how many stations there are off island, and that would provide the connection between Cambell and Hawking.

Yes, Unbridled, TPTB said a while back that we'd find that there are a few other stations stationed on the mainland. Good observation:cool:

I know I'm stating the obvious but maybe if we collectively talk through it we can unravel her story.

Aside from the island, she is the tie that binds Ben, Widmore and Desmond.

Ben = She seems to be his trusted adviser, he seems to be accountable to her and is trusting her to get the O6 back.

Widmore = He sent Desmond right to her door, whether she turns out to be Dan's Mommy or not. She also was instrumental in keeping Penny and Des apart which was Widmore's goal.

Desmond = She advised him not to change history by proposing to Penny and told Des that he needed to push the button.

The most interesting tie is through Brother Campbell. Desmond was set to marry Ruth. 1 week before the wedding, Desmond had "too many pints", woke up to a monk asking him, "Can I help you brother?", Des knew he was supposed to go with him and then joined the monastery. Des then gets fired, returns his robe and we see a picture on Brother Campbell's desk of him and Ms. Hawking. When Des asks what he should do with himself, Brother Campbell says, "God has bigger plans for you" and "you should do whatever comes next". Ironically, the next thing that happens is meeting Penny who was sent to the monastery by her father, Charles Widmore, to buy wine.

So if Penny was sent there by her father on the same day Des was fired by Brother Campbell, is it possible it was a set-up? Whose side is Ms. Hawking on since she has ties to both sides? And was Widmore part of setting up the meeting of Des and Penny? Was Ms. Hawking? Was Ben?

YES! That is what i suggested on my local forum in AUS. But i was thinking that maybe Penny has been in cahootz with her daddy from the get go. Man, did i get slandered after posting that! In season 2 (cant remember Which episode) Desmond says "penny said to me once, you can find anyone with enough time and money". Now he said this referring to a conversation that took place not long after meeting him at the monastery and before he went missing on the race around the world. I put forward the notion that Penny and charles widmore, through the foresight of Eloise, were searching for desmond due to his unique ability. which is that the rules dont apply to him, due to his exposure to the electromagnetic explosion of the swan.(even though the explosion happened after he was stranded on the island.) That always happened so it must still happen. They had to find desmond so that the timline was not disrupted! also in response to the question" whose side is Eloise on?" I think she is on noones side. she is like Switzerland! or she just works for the greater good, of humanity

Wow you make a really good point there! When you really think about it, whose side IS she on?

Maybe we are looking at this the wrong way... Perhaps we shouldn't be asking whose side she's on because a) maybe there are more than two sides and b) who's to say she is subjected to sides? We are under the assumption that it's as if there are two ultimate sides, Ben and Widmore, with Hawking underneath them. But what if it's Ben and Widmore trying to get on Hawking's side. Does that even make sense? I think I worded that awkwardly.
Anyway, maybe Hawking is really in control here and is using both Ben and Widmore. She knew Widmore could manipulate Des because SHE knows he's special. But she never told this to Ben, which is why Ben is so surprised to see Des but more importantly he is surprised that Des knows who Faraday is.
I'm at work right now, so I can't really rewatch any episodes to check this so maybe you guys can help me out since your collective memory will be much better than mine. But I don't think Faraday and Desmond met on the island (or at the very least not that Ben would know of) so I think Ben was surprised to hear Des say something about Faraday because Des was never supposed to meet Faraday (neither during his flashes on the boat where we first learn about constants or at the hatch). Ben seems to know what is SUPPOSED to happen, but not these tweaks that Des is involved with.
Kind of a half-baked theory, I know. Let me know what you guys think.

Your comments make a lot of sense! I like your train of thought a lot. To paraphrase, I think you're saying that Ms. Hawking is a neutral third party that, for whatever reason, seems to hold all the power. Ben and Widmore are pitted against one another but she doesn't hava anything to do with their feud. That's interesting and makes a lot of sense!

I have a thought as to the feud between Ben and Widmore. What if it's simply science vs. faith? Ben, with his use of technology to control the inhabitants on the island and obvious quest to "fix" the island's issues with fertility through science vs. Widmore and his antiquated technology despite his wealth and his saying to Ben, "That island is mine, Benjamin. It always was. It will be again", and the presence of the temple. What I find most interesting in light of what you theorized about Ms. Hawkings is her headquarters. It is literally a church on top of a science station! Just something to ponder!

I really like this idea of science vs. faith. The producers certainly do imply this a lot whether it be through episode titles or just the reoccurring theme of such.
So far, I believe that Eloise Hawking is....
a) Ellie (the young girl who escorts Faraday to the bomb)
b) Faraday's mother
c) Penny's mother
My reasoning for C is the distraught reply Penny has to Des saying she is dead. I think Penny has been raised around this obsession with the island whether it be from her father, her mother, her brother (Faraday), her brother's girlfriend (Teresa I think was her name? and who I believe to be the mother of Charlotte with Faraday).
I guess I should explain that last part... I think now that they are unstuck in Dharma time, Faraday will meet Charlotte's mother and fall in love with her being that she reminds him so much of Charlotte. Note the obvious lack of physical attraction between Charlotte and Faraday in order to make it not as weird when we eventually find this out. This reminds me of a sci fi story where a man goes back in time and ends up becoming his own father (only not quite as bizarre), which seems to be the type of stuff Lost writers love to utilize in their plotting.
Went way out on a limb on this one, feel free to rip it apart.

LissaMarie
02-18-2009, 03:59 AM
I'm not the "rip apart" type...no worries! I do agree that Ms. Hawking may turn out to be Penny's Mom. Penny seemed to know that Des was lying to her about Faraday's Mom being dead, and not in the "you're my husband and I know when you're lying" kind of way. It was as if she knows his mother personally and knows she isn't dead. Which means that she knows Daniel and a lot more about the island than we may think she does.

I'm not sure about the Charlotte being Daniel's daughter part and here's why. He said he was "IN LOVE" with the woman sitting next to him. That would be really creepy if he turned out to be her father, wouldn't it? I have thought about the idea a lot because there is something odd about their chemistry but I just can't get past the "IN LOVE" thing.

Lovin' this idea. Especially since we've seen him recruit for Widmore's team. Can anyone remember what the questions were that he asked Hurley? It seems like he was pretty hostile towards him if I remember correctly. I find it interesting that Abbadon interogated Hurley but not the other O'6?

also i think she serves a simiar purpose as Faraday which is to explain the craziness to the viewer. Faraday is explaining the science parts of time travel while Hawking is explaining the mystical parts of it? and i said in another post somewhere that i think all this time travel business is really a way to get at their Destiny vs. Free Will themes.

also i think she serves a simiar purpose as Faraday which is to explain the craziness to the viewer. Faraday is explaining the science parts of time travel while Hawking is explaining the mystical parts of it? and i said in another post somewhere that i think all this time travel business is really a way to get at their Destiny vs. Free Will themes.

am i babling now? well i am very fatigued from reading all these pleasantries. because of that i would like to say i hate you all. Eloise is a crazy old hag by the way. take that!

You're allways either babbling or whining. Either way it's pointless.

I am SOOOOOO onto you, TP! You don't hate us. You just like to "stir the pot", that's all. I get it! You're what my Daddy would call a sh#@ disturber! And that's ok. I like ornery people and a "devil's advocate". I welcome a healthy debate and different opinions than my own. Bring it!! I just choose to do it with respect and a smile on my face, that's all! So I will say it loud and proud...

I LIKE YOU, TP!! SO SUCK IT!!!! :)

Here'sLOCKEing at you,Kid

do you know that sh#@ disturber was actually going to be the name of one of Prodigy's biggest hits? someone said Firestarter was catchier so they switched to that at the last minute.

this has been another moment in 'things that didn't really happen.'

brought to you by Johnson & Johnson.

anyway, my mom always taught me that if you didn't have anything nice to say you should scream it at the top of your lungs in front of 50,000 screaming lunatics while wearing a painted body suit and helmet.

big Giants fan my mom was...

You are an interesting human, TP! You bring an extra little "umph" to the board and I, for one, like it! Carry on, my friend...

(And no, I didn't know that about Prodigy but I think that's funny (and I'm thrilled that I'm still hip enough to know who that is)! I never have come up with a good synonym for sh#$ disturber other than "pot stirrer" and that just doesn't have the same panache, you know? Fire starter I like!:D (Sorry for being nice and agreeable again...I know you like it when people are nasty and full of hatred so BITE ME!!):p

+1 for using the word panache

prodigy isn't that hip anymore and the fact that you know them probably means you're getting old... like me :-/

other alterations on this phrase from the same group:

trouble starter
punkin instigator
danger illustrated
filth infatuated
mind detonator
twisted animator

sh*t disturber is actually a very strange phrase. i guess sh*t starter is one that starts sh*t, but a sh*t disturber is one who disturbs... i'm getting confused... your father was weird.

please don't call me human again, that's very presumptuous... i don't even know what i'm talking about anymore... i need to go to bed now.

by the way, i think my original point was to agree with most of you in saying that Eloise Hawking was not on anyone's side?
