I'm thinking, could it be that the freighters are actually there not to kill Ben, but to save him, in other words - they are on the side of the others?

Of course it could be that after the freighters and the oceanic 6 left the island Ben managed to escape Locke and he knows how to get off the island. So he got off. But it won't explain having Sayid work for him, while if the freighters are part of the Others it makes much more sense. It also matches Ben shooting at Charlotte and she wearing a vest...

Yeah this idea is making more sense to me. The main characteristic of Ben's that always came up last season is that he makes you do things for him, only he makes you think you are doing it for yourself. In that regard, his whole attempt to get Jack to stay on the island and not communicate with the boat was probably planned because he knew Jack would not listen to him at all. Obviously I have no idea how this all fits together, just throwing that out there.

It makes even more sense when you look at the past episodes: Ben has been trying to infiltrate the group many times - first was Ethan, then the guy with the tail-survivors, then Juliet was sent with the same mission, he himself tried to do it once as Henry Gale. So I'm thinking Naomi and then the freighters could be doing the same...
