Hey, does anyone know what the gray trail of stuff was leading to where Jacob's cabin was supposed to be? When Locke picked it up, it looked like gun powder. Any thougts?

I think it's volcanic ash...looked like there was a circle of it.

John was making a marker for himself to find the cabin. A tracking thing, but the island/Jacob aren't bound by our laws of physics.

Well we know that the powder stuff was in the cabin previously...Locke picked some of it up before and even smelled it back in season 3 when Ben took Locke to see Jacob the first time. Some are speculating that its some sort of protective barrier to keep Jacob in the cabin but maybe it was placed there so Ben could find the cabin.....perhaps the cabin is only seen at night? The only 2 times we've seen it have been when Locke saw it and when Hurley stumbled upon it...both were at night? So maybe Ben put the powder there so he could find the place during the day?

I don't think Locke put it there since Locke saw it the first time he was taken to the cabin...I think its something Ben could have possibly put down.

it was surrounding the cabin on his original trip with ben and i thought it meant that jacob was trapped within this. however, i dont recall the ash when hurley found the cabin.

i am not sure why it has moved - perhaps locke has done something wrong and its no longer visible to him. it may only be visible at certain times etc....

OK, my bad, I forgot about it being there before. Isn't the cabin only been seen during the night?? The ash? could be the mark that it's there but it's seen like the island can't be seen.

Yes, the cabin has only been seen at night. And we know from Hurley that it can move. I think the powder was to show that Locke knew he was at the right spot, but the cabin was not there. I actually liked that Ben said thought Locke was looking for someone to tell him what to do next. Ben was amused that Locke did not understand the riddle of when the cabin appears.

Does any1 else think it is possible that the cabin or Jacob can only be seen by 1 person at a time. I know that Locke only saw Jacob when Ben looked away, and hurley saw it and it disappeared when locke showed up. the only thing wrong with that is that locke and ben went to the cabin together the first time, and they both saw it.

the night thing does make sense bt then why did hurley see it in a different location?

I think in that episode they were just trying to illustrate Hurley's tendency to hallucinate. Just my opinion though.

but how could he hallucinate the exact cabin that locke saw with he same interior and everything?

well has anyone seen the skeleton key?? in that movie these ppl believed alot in hoodoo nd crap. they used this red powder all the time to keep evils away nd wat not. so maybe its something like that?

I think they did that so you would question what is real and what is not to Hurley, all leading up to his "Encounter" with Charlie at the end of the episode

i also believe that ben was right.

Ben: "jacob is not a man you just go and see. he is a man who summons you."

so i dont think jacob summoned locke yet!

I think Hurley saw it the first time, I was just referring to the "time it moved" to a different spot and then dissapeared when he closed his eyes.

yes but he can hallucinate charlie correctly as he has met him already. i believe hurleys second sighting of the cabin was a hallucination as he had already seen it seconds before but the original time, i believe he actually saw it.

aah i see - no need for me to prattle on then lol!

however, he was still convinced it was in the opposite direction and i think he was referring to his original sighting.

Exactly, thats what I was trying to say :)
So, I dont think the cabin has actually "moved" or disappeared untill this point where Locke finds the powder but no cabin.
