When the button had to be pushed every 108 minutes, it maybe emitted a wave/signal when discharged that enabled the Dharma initiative to track the island? The island was untraceable until the Dharma people started pushing the button.
once the failsafe key was turned, it stopped. I think that the island didn't get unstuck in time at all, it has always been moving. I think that now they just can't track it, because the button pushing is gone. That meant that they had to go back to the old fashioned way of locating the island, the foucoult's pendulum.
