prob just an alias. remember all the passports Ben had with diffrent names???
well maybe he got Locke a fake identity as well so that there was no suspision as to how John Locke (passenger of flight 815) had somehow shown up dead after all this time.

I like this brief discription of the comparison between both names and characters.
"Bentham was also known for his outspoken opposition to the French revolutionary discourse of natural rights, an idea championed by philosopher John Locke (whose father, also named John Locke, worked for Jeremy Bentham). He also suggested a procedure for estimating the moral status of any action. His principle regards "good" as that which produces the greatest amount of physical or spiritual pleasure, and the minimum amount of pain; and "evil" as that which produces the most pain without the pleasure.
Bentham also argued that the ability to suffer, not the ability to reason, must be the benchmark of how we treat other beings. He stated that if the ability to reason were the criterion, many human beings, including babies and disabled people, would have to be treated as though they were things, rather than beings. "

nice!
yeah i was looking for what the significance of these names were. i was a math major so i'm lost on most of these philosophical references.
i still don't fully understand what these names reveal about the characters themselves, if anything. John Locke the character believes humans are not born with inate knowlege? is this in opposition to original sin where people are supposed to be baptized becaues humans are supposedly inately evil? he believes that humans should be judged on their ability to suffer not on their ability to reason? what now about bentham's prison structure? WTF? what does this have to with Lost anyway?
Also it seems the real John Locke was an inspiration for democracy but the Jacob and the others hardly seem democratic. It seems like Jacob tells "The Leader" what to do and everyone follows The Leader's order. The Leader does not appear to be selected through any democratic process. I do remember Locke being a more democratic leader than Jack when was missing. Does the reference to these philosophers mean John will be a better more democratic leader than Benjamin Linus and other leaders that preceeded him?
i'm really confused now sorry

There's a couple of things i find interesting on there.
"Bentham was an outspoken critic of the violence which arose after a group called "The Jacobins" seized power in a coup after the fall of the French monarchy"
That seems a lot like the others taking over after the purge. They even have Jacob in their name.
"As requested in his will, Jeremy Bentham's body was preserved and stored in a wooden cabinet, termed his "Auto-icon"."
It seems to me Locke has planned everything out. He knew he had to die and become Jack's proxy. He killed himself knowing he had to be in a coffin for the trip back.

I just read up on Jeremy Bentham...
Dessie, you bring up an interesting thought about the Jacobites....I was thinking Jacob was a reference to Jacob in the Bible, but now that Bentham is a part of this....brings up some more questions. Now all we need is a Robert Burns character (ha!)

*couldn't
and capitalizing the first letters of random words throughout your post doesn't make it more grammatically correct.
that being said the post you were criticizing does have it's share of mistakes but I've definately seen worse on here, so if you wouldn't mind I think I'm not the only one who would prefer you keep your negative commentary to yourself.

I still didn't understand why the Jacobites were called that.

I still didn't understand why the Jacobites were called that.
It was that specific clan or leader of the Scottish Clan. It was the Jacob clan that began the revolution, basically. I'm trying to find the specifics, but I'm failing miserably. I know I heard the story of "Jacob" and I'm not sure if it was the head of the clan whose name was Jacob or if it was the last name of the clan. Anyway, that particular ideology became a way of life and became a political party of sorts; Hence, the name Jacobites.
