Who got to Ben's face? My thoughts since he was at the Harbor did he go and try to kill Penny? He said he made a promise to an old friend and was going to go tie up some loose ends. The old friend would be Widmore and the loose end would be Penny?

i think he not only tried but actually killed penny. that would give desmond a reason to go back

He probably did go to settle his score with Widmore but I do not think they would kill off Penny. The whole Des and Pen relationship is a big part of the substory in Lost. I would love to see Penny actually kick Ben around a little! Even though I do love the Linus character it would be quite a twist!

Or...Ben went to get Sayid in trouble to somehow get him on the plane. Kinda like how he sets everything up. Maybe Sayid was at Desmond and Penelope's boat. I read somewhere about the book Ben was reading on the plane and the main female character in that book is named Penelope.

I think Ben’s vindictiveness is such that it won’t be good enough for him to simply kill Penny; he will want to force Widmore to watch her execution like he did Alex’s. Ugh.

If Ben literally "tied up" the loose end -- if he captured Penny and had her smuggled onto the plane's cargo hold -- Des & Widmore could team up on a rescue effort. (Well, assuming Des wan't also captured.)

I like this theory, I doubt it would be enough for Ben to just simply kill penny, he would want the same to happen to Widmore (i.e watch Penny die like Ben watched Alex die) plus he wouldn't have got as badly injured killing Penny surely??? unless Des beat him for hanging around near Penny (ready to kill her)??

Personally i think someone beat Linus up for something other than what we know. Possibly by Sayid but it doesn't explain why the Police guard woman or whatever she was, was transporting Sayid to Guam???

it seems the most obvious he was after penny but would she put up THAT much of a fight? desmond would have but i am sure ben wouldnt be walking around if that was the case lol! widmore? he wasnt even in LA last we saw....its a tricky one.

I agree that Ben is more complex than to simply kill Penny. I like the post that mentioned the literal "to tie up". If that is the case, his damages could have been caused by attempting or succeeding in kidnapping Penny. He might have even killed her in some elaborate fashion in front of Widmore. Perhaps Sayid intervened and took care of Ben only to get arrested himself. Don't worry I know this makes no sense.

just a random guess but his wounds didn't really look like someone kicked his ass like when jack or sayid kept punching him in the face I say scratches like a car accident or something.

At first I just thought he'd killed Penny, but Sirchin just said on another thread that he reckoned it was Sayid, and now that's what I think happened! The fact that Sayid was tied in with that episode and is marched on in handcuffs looking very resentful and giving Ben what he wanted reluctantly - it makes a lot of sense to me. Plus I think when Ben does go to kill Penny, they'll have a bigger storyline involved around the whole thing. Also, if he killed Penny I think he'd have more blood on his clothes, but it's all on his face, so I think he just got a few punches or something - that's one so far this season! I wonder how many times Ben will get punched this season?

here is what i think may have happend, Desmond leaves Widmores office, Widmore tells a team of his men to follow and find out where he and Penny are, he then gets a team together to follow and protect Penny(knowing that Ben said he would kill her), what happens when Ben attacks?????????? they stop him from getting to her.

this would be why Ben may not be finished with what he was doing.

another theorie is it was Sayeed, they seamed to exchange an awkward stare as Ben boarded flight 316.

Oh, and I think he's LIVING in the Marina (remember the O6 met there and THEN went to go see Mrs. HAwking) so he went home to do whatever to keep his promise to Locke....and Syiad beat the crap out of him. Ben sent him to Jail- told his lawyer to extradie him, got Hurley out of the Clink....and presto!

My current theory is the wounds are self-inflicted so he can try to be the recreation of John Locke of the original flight (crippled=broken arm) so he can try to get back to the island. probably wrong tho.
