A drunken discussion between Des, Hurley and Charlie about what made Des know when lightning was going to strike or Claire's trouble in the water takes us to Desmond's flashbacks.
When I first saw this episode back in season 3 I thought it was just weird and could not make any sense out of it. So I put it away as some kind of anomaly, hallucination or just some kind of strange dream. Now we know about the time traveling and Eloise Hawkins is now a central character and the episode all of a sudden makes a whole lot of sense.
The way I see it is that when Des turned the key something happened that sent him back a couple of years in time ending up on the floor in his apartment. He relives a period of time, get smacked in the bar with a cricket bat and ends up naked back on the island. This leads up to some new questions. Is there another way of the island than turning the donkey wheel? Or was the hatch/key/magnetism connected with the wheel or what the wheel controls/hides?
What do you think? What was this? It was in a way similar to the experience he had when Faraday knocked on the hatch door and told him to find his mother. But that thing worked from past time to present time. And if he traveled back in time, shouldn't he had met his old self? A deja vu seems a little silly when it comes to our present knowledge of Lost but I can't get everything to add up... Is Des the key to understanding the island? Not suggesting that Des is Jacob or anyone important, just that it might be through understanding him and his whereabouts we understand the mysteries and find the answers of the island?
I am losing my self here. Please help me out! your thoughts?

i think he was just time traveling in his own mind. It was all replaying in his head. He was re-living it. Then when he gets smacked he finds himself there naked in the jungle. I havent seen the episode in a while tho.

In this season's opener, Faraday tells Desmond that the rules did not apply to him. He must be special in someway. He was Faraday's constant, so there must be a reason. We just don't know yet.

Maybe thats why he is special because he became faradys constant in the past? which i think was before desmond came on the island? Maybe when daniel ever time travelled that causes desmond to experince time travel but not with farady he just for some reason time travels on his todd?
I dont think my explanation makes much sense though? any of yous understand what i mean?

Desmond was temporally time traveling. I have said that since the episode. You should go back into the archives and look for some past threads about it. You may find them very interesting. You have hit it spot on though. And please take a look at the thread I posted about the man with the red shoes. I don't know if you have ever seen Dr. Who on television but I am a big fan. The man in the red shoes appears to have been modeled after David Tennent, the actor who portrayed Doc Who in the fourth season. Same clothing stlye, same red keds. By the way, and this is the kicker, Doctor Who is a Time Lord. This was a big clue for us.

what about the picture of eloise hawking and the monk, sitting on the monk's desk when he tells desmond his path isn't at the monestary. then tells him to go load the wine into penny's truck? WHAT ABOUT THAT????

i think Desmond's character and how he ties into the overall story took a backseat role in Season 5 so it can take a prevelent role in the story's resolution. So far the most underestimated characters in my view have been Desmond, Daniel Faraday and Claire/Aaron. Plus, in my head the only character that has the ability to make an impact bigger than all other characters in Hugo. There's something about him....

Yes, it is a mock-up photo with Ellie and Brother Campbell in front of Oxford. There were a few other photos that where made to purposfully look like a collage as well. It's interesting and definitly means something.

I think who ever said about it's causes because of season 5? (hopefully thats what you did say and im not reading what i want to read lol) I think Elouis must always remember shooting her son and thats why she becomes so interested in the whole time travel ?

Yeh, he is the only other 100% fatalist like Locke....although it appears that Jacob has kept him from the dark side.
I don't believe that Desmond was "time traveling". He did not actually "go" anywhere. He was given glimpses by Jacob or the incident of the time continum. This allowed him to see future time paths...he was psychic. Time paths of theoretical probability based on preceeding events. This "deja vu" was already hypothesized what it was in their other show.
