Why not Horace? he's not a hippie. doesn't wear tie-dye. hair isn't quite long enough to flow with the cosmic groove. i thought it was funny that he later actually became head of Dharma security after Horace told him this.
What other reason's make Sawyer not a DI type of guy?

IDK but that remark to Sawyer by Horace made me think of Widmore's ragging on Desmond that he would never be a great man! Now it seems that the opposite may come true. In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennett states to her parents: "I promise you that I shall NEVER dance with Mr. Darcy!" Just a while later--guess what? Declarations are made to broken!!! The law of some kind of opposites? LOL

Wasn't DI about research? They where into education of their young, Goodspeed told Bens dad they had the best education. If DI society was on one end of the academic ladder... no offense to Sawyer (he is one of my favorites on the island) but he comes across as someone at the other end of the ladder if you know what I mean...

you're correct, i'm sure this is what he intended.
Sawyer may not be capable of solving complicated physics problems, but he has intelligence in other arenas. There are no courses in street smarts, but if there were, he'd be an A student. I think the head of security is a great spot for him.

My immediate thought was because the DI are pacifists. Dharma is a Buddhist word and Buddhists don't believe in killing. Sawyer had just murdered 2 of the Others. That is why I figured he wasn't DI material.

Good thought. Though I'm not entirely sure they're pacifists as they do have quite the stock of weaponry and an entire station designed to aid in the fight against the Hostiles.
But I like this train of thought. After all, the whole point of Dharma (according to the orientation videos) was to achieve this great, free-thinking utopia-like place. In one of the orientation videos Dr. Chang says "Our mission is to study these properties for the betterment of mankind and advancement of world peace."

True, but if you think about it, we know that the DI are responsible for installing a sonic fence that doesn't kill (or isn't set to kill). It only temporarily disables the perp by making them pass out. That seems pretty passive, especially when they are in conflict with hostiles. Who is responsible for all of the weaponry (guns, etc.)? The DI? The Hostiles? Our 1954 American H-bomb crew? I don't think it's fair to assume the DI is responsible for that.

I absolutely think Dharma is responsible for all the weaponry. The Swan hatch was loaded with new guns and ammo. It was all too new to belong to the Hostiles or the US Military when they were on the island, so I think they definitely brought it themselves.
Also, if I recall correctly, we saw the fence almost kill Mikhail. He made mention that the only reason he didn't die was because the fence wasn't set to a lethal setting. I think when Amy "turned off the fence" she just turned down the settings so that she could knock out our survivors and learn more about who these people were before doing anything with them.

But you also have to remember that Ben's group of Others had taken over the DI camp when we saw all of the modern weaponry. They also had access to the outside world and the ability to arm themselves to the teeth.
We do know that "a war is coming". If the war is between the hostiles (Richard's group) and the DI, I think they will quickly change their thinking on the whole pacifist thing if that is what they are now!
I really don't have a solid theory that the DI are pacifists...I'm just playing devil's advocate in order to think this through. Thanks for your comments!

I always play devil's advocate, it makes for more interesting discussion. But you are right, the modern weaponry could have come from the Others and not Dharma.
I was going to say this before but didn't because it sounds rather silly, but what if Dharma really is pacifist but the onslaught of the hostiles made them stock up to allow them to defend themselves? That really defeats the idea of pacifism, of course, but I can't imagine that people they call the "hostiles" are easy to get along with. So perhaps the weaponry is just for their own defense and nothing more. As you said, there isn't much of a choice when other people are constantly attacking you, so they likely wouldn't stay pacifist forever.
when am i?

Even Ghandi believed that there can be a case where violence is nessasary, not the first choice but sometimes its the only way especially if original hostile inhabitants of a mysterious island are attacking you.
