The Others' Purpose

This post assumes that you've already seen the entire third season, or at least up to the 11th or 12th episode. It may contain spoilers.

So, it's pretty clear that the Others kidnapped Jack so that he could perform spinal surgery on Ben. But was it ever made completely clear to us why Sawyer and Kate were kidnapped along with him? I'm assuming there was more to their capture than just a bargaining chip to get Jack to do it...

There was a comment by one of the others, the guy whose wife was killed by sun, that jacks name was not on a list by jacob, but kate and sawyers names were and the guy felt it was justified therefor to kill kate and sawyer if i'm not mistaken.

I remember the guy saying shepperd isn't even on the list but I don't think they ever said sawyer and kate were
