Jack said this to Kate and as the seasons continued, we learned that Locke told Jack that in order to save their fellow Losties, the Oceanic 6 must return to the island. From the promos for Season 5, it seemed that the remaining Losties were constantly under attack, indicating that only upon the return of the Oceanic 6 would their lives be saved. We learned at the beginning of S5 that the Losties were actually time traveling and while their lives were "in danger" they were not actually being targeted, but rightly so, those they came across during the varios time loops were actually defending themselves against a group of people who appeared out of no where.

Please stay with me here.

Locke is then told by Richard that the following events AKA time traveling were a result of the Oceanic 6 leaving and John would have to leave the island and die to bring them back. What we soon learned from Christian is that Ben screwed things up,hence the time travel and subsequent nose bleeds. So Locke turns the wheel and sets "time" right.....I think not, anyway, the lives of the remaining Losties and newbies (Faraday and Miles) are saved. Thus it would appear that the Oceanic 6 did not have to return, right? I don't know for certain. Which leads to this........

If the Oceanic 6 is so important, why were they never on the infamous and most exclusive Jacob's List? In S4 Ben told Locke that while the Temple was the last place of sanctuary for his (Ben's) people, the Losties were not welcome, and I'm assuming b/c they were not on Jacob'c List.

I'm getting a nose bleed, but why are the Oceanic 6 now so important? Or was it all done to get John to die and he is the one that is most important in all of this?

all we know about jacobs list is tom said that jack wasnt on the list. maybe the ppl on the list are the ones to be left alone, not kidnapped or killed. idk the answer to why the temple is not for the losties but i'm guessing its because the losties "have work to do".
the 06 are important because that is what we are going to find out about. again i'l guess because all of them are required to play a part in some kind of "mission"

Hawking, Ben, Richard and Christian all agreed the O6 had to return so it seems it was important for the O6 to return whether they were on Jacob's list or not. Also, since Ben was in charge of the list, I wouldn't swear he told the truth about who was on it since Ben has such well documented issues with the truth.

All I can conclude is either the island screwed up and the O6 we not supposed to leave in the first place or the island allowed Aaron to escape and Ji Yeon and 'lil Charlie to be born for some reason. So the kids, including Walt, are now off the island and the adults are returning.

In the back of my mind are Des' assertions in the Lamp Post - the O6 are being used. It seems to fit whether it's Ben, Widmore, Richard or the island manipulating them, the Losties seem to be doing exactly what the island wants...for now.

The losties are important because in my theory they are the future "Others" to protect the island.
