Maybe a threat of death of the ones left on the island they don't want to be the cause of that.

yes, they have folk working off the island - think mystery 'lawyer' who visits hurley.

however, hurley appears to be very paranoid so he could be a product of that.

I think the lie they are keeping is that the island even existed. Since Hurley and Ana Lucia were on 2 completely separate sections of the plane, they wouldn't have met unless before they got on the plane really. Sure is interesting thought.
