What is the point of all this time travelling nonsense if,"whatever happened happened" is true.
Why waste all this time jumping around in time if nothing can be changed?

Because it's about the characters' journey, and it makes for an interesting story...

Maybe it is for the characters to learn things that may change them for the better in the future.
Seems like the island is educating/training them in ways that will come in handy for their ultimate purpose on it.
The only interesting thing other than that is to see the history of the island which I hope we will see a LOT more of before the end of the season.

Because if they didn't, they would never end up on the island in the first place.

Not going back would have changed the future and thus create a paradox.

Exactly! I think it's so they can play '70 music. LOST is really just a drama focussing on character interactions. They put the sci-fi stuff in there to make themselves look smart and sucker in that crowd.

Because the only way "whatever happened happened" applies is if they travel back in time. They aren't meant to change the future, but live their destiny to make sure things happen in the future - i.e. Locke giving the compass to Richard. Had Locke not done so, Richard wouldn't have searched for him and he likely wouldn't be so special. And the only way for Locke to do that is with time travel.

It's also a simple way for us to learn about Dharma and the Others without someone simply telling us what happened. Now we can see it for ourselves.

Yes mate, they certainly have. If it turns out the time-travel stuff is minor to the story and LOST is a character drama, they would have suckered me in big time. And I would admire them greatly for that, if nothing else. :D

Yeah switching between that and the AFL (Aussie football) that just started back this week. With my laptop doing work, and on here. While having a beer. :D

Great question - one that I have asked many times.

1. The time jumping IS part of the island's past and the participating characters' past so it's part of the whole story.

2. I think we'll see Des, Dan and Ben are able to work around WHH so stay tuned. Things should get more interesting.

Because the video game they are in would be really boring without it ;)

i think dan is full of crap and is delusional due to witnessing charlottes death. i think at most he is only half right. the past that everyone else experienced cannot be changed, but since our losties are actually experiencing their future, anything is possible. think about it. why in the world would any of the losties in 1977 even consider getting on oceanic 815 again? what happens to them now is their future, and now everything can change...

They don't get on 815 again; their past selves do.
