View Full Version : Smokemonsters and such

I have some thoughts on the nature of Smokie that I want to share. I’d like to know what you may think of it.

I have to start by stating (at the risk of being banished from this forum at the onset)

[that] I believe that Smokie is Jacob.

Well that being said, ever since I started watching Lost, the Smokemonster has been bothering me a great deal. I feel the show has been written in such a manner that all mysteries that come to pass can eventually be ‘reasonably’ explained within a scientific context. Or, with some effort at least. Quantum physical parallel universes, hey if the Einsteins of this world think it’s even slightly plausible, than I’m willing to take their word for it and accept it all as a basic principle for the show.

Now, I can handle Icebears, black rocks, white stones, magnetic energiefields, even the occasional time-loop. But Smokie just comes straight out of a horror movie. What the heck is it?

After watching almost five seasons of Lost, the simplest explanation I can come up with, is that Smokie is an entity very much like Christian and perhaps Richard and Locke (now that he is back on the Island). So far we have seen that ‘dead people’ that are brought to the Island, or within it’s range, mysteriously come back to life. This has been the case with both Locke and Christian. Let’s just say that the electro-magnetic properties of the Island somehow allow a consciousness, some form of energy, to return to the their old physical properties. Are they dead, are they undead, are they alive? I don’t know, but they’re walking and talking and clearly have some unfinished business to attend to.

Now, what if Jacob was someone who lived and died a long time ago (let’s say Ancient-Egypt-time) and was brought to the Island after his death, not in a coffin, but in an urn. His departed conscioussnes returned to it’s remains, but what remained were ashes. Voila, Smokie!

Hah

Okay…. so I’ll just talk away now for a bit.

(By the way, wasn’t there a circle of ashes laid around Jacob’s Cabin at one point in the show? A way to contain him?)

So, this theory would allow for the idea that Smokie/ Jacob has been on the Island for a long time. Perhaps he got (willingly?) cut of from Egyptian civilization when the Island moved at some point. It would account for his somewhat antisocial tendencies (having been alone for century’s) and his distrust of modern gizmo’s (such as a flashlight).

And Richard may have come to the Island in a similar fashion. Having already died before setting foot on wall and being resurrected by the powers of the Island. Who knows, perhaps arriving on the Black Rock. Now being timeless, Richard and Jacob would naturally become a leading and protecting power of the Island and it’s inhabitants. With the arrival of the US Army and subsequently the DI, a power struggle originated (that may very well have to do with the animosities between Widmore and Ben).

It seems Richard’s priorities are with the protection of his people, depending on Jacob for help. Christian for that matter (another undead) seems to be aiming for a happy family reunion and is trying to accomplish this by aiding Jacob as well. And I think Ben and Widmore are both doing their best to accommodate Jacob to gain whatever it is they are after.
As for Jacob’s ultimate goal, I have no idea, but Locke (undead # 4) must play a great part in it. It just may be that he is being lined up to make a sacrifice that will finally end Jacob’s struggles.

( And how is that for a trailer ::D )

Very interesting theory. Im not sure if it was ashes or salt that was around jacobs cabin. Also to me it seems like Christian is working against Jacob (why havent we seen Jacob in so long) and Christian is working toward his own goals.
