My friend has an idea about who Jacob might be. He said he could be the captain of the Black Rock (maybe a spirit or something), and that the white powder around the cabin might be rock salt to keep the spirit trapped. Your thoughts?

If you're referring to the Black Rock website with all the names....that site is not legitimate.

On Find815, it says that it's thought the Blackrock was being captained by Mangus Hanso when it disappeared. It doesn't say it was positively him, but I'm leaning towards it being true because why else would they have included it on the site?
Oh! Also, on the blast door map it says "known final resting place of Mangus Hanso Blackrock". It's towards the lower left.

But.. I don't think he's Jacob.. because his name is Mangus...

I'm pretty sure that's just someone's theory. We still don't know anything about him.

dude, at this point i believe jacob is a spirit, and so may everyone else, he is sorta "one" with the island so I don't think he's a physical being.

On lostpedia.com, I saw somewhere that the powder surrounding the Cabin is volcanic ash that Ben uses to control Jacob, but that Jacob still has control over Ben to a certain degree. I forgot where exactly I saw this, but it cited the director's commentary on season three as a source....
