I'm re-watching season 2 and in the episode "The 23rd Psalm" Mr. Eko burns the heroine plane, presumably with his brother Yemi's dead body in it. Immediately after setting the plane and his brother on fire, Mr. Eko tells Charlie that yes he is a priest and says a prayer by reciting the 23rd Psalm.

But why would he do that? I always thought this was not acceptable to members of the Catholic faith, of which Mr. Eko seemed to belong (he made a comment to Yemi that the Monsignor would have said he failed to raise a proper Catholic boy). Why wouldn't Mr. Eko bury his brother's body first?

According to this website

cremation is not strictly forbidden to those of the Catholic faith, although the text of the article makes it clear that it is frowned upon in some circles.
