It sounds an awful lot like free will to me, but who's to say Ben even knows what's going on. He didn't even seem to know about all the time travel that happened after he turned the wheel.

Yeah, could be that. Or: "You can't avoid toilets or indecisive....female dogs."

I believe what Ben was trying to say is that destiny sometimes suprises you and youll be moving one way in life when all the sudden your life takes a completly new direction that you may not want. The line was forshadowing this season.

Missie is exactly right. Ben could see that things weren't going to work out to his benefit and now he's trying to change things by returning to the island. He may have even been refering directly to the whole 'once you move the island you can never return' thing. He made it back so did he change destiny?

I think this reverts back to Desmond and Charlie. Even if specific events change, they always will end up with the same result. Desmond delayed Charlie's death, but he couldn't stop it. Even with certain events slowing the process and changing small things with the island, Losties, Others, Dharma, etc...The ultimate result will be the same. Dharma will be dessimated, the Losties plane will crash, Ben will gain power, then lose it to Locke...No matter what small re-routes are made.

Even if Sayids actions weren't supposed to happen, it won't change the ultimate result. Destiny will fall into place, one way or another.

I dunno...He returned to 2007 not 1977, but I suppose he is on the Island. He did also tell Locke he always has a plan...Not that his plans are ever very nice, but perhaps he knows more than he lets on (as usual...)....

Absolutely. If, for instance, you look at Locke's destiny to become leader, you'll see that he had to have the terrible relationship with his father, become paralyzed, learn about the walkabout, and then crash on the island - all necessary steps to get him where he is today. As we know, his destiny to become the leader wasn't exactly a walk in the park. But he goes from a crappy life to (supposedly) a prosperous one as the leader of the Others.

Ben seems to be somewhat similar. He went from a crappy childhood, to a prosperous life as leader, and now he's done and left to fend for himself. So destiny hasn't exactly been good to him either.

No where does it say destiny is a good thing. If your destiny is to die (like Charlie) I wouldn't be jumping for joy. Sometimes destiny just sucks.

Ah right, thanks for that. See, I was thinking he was saying that destiny was not fixed, it could change at any moment, and that change might not be so wonderful. Which obviously didn't fit into the WHAH mould.

Good point. The words "Fickle" and "Destiny" contradict each other. When we think of destiny by itself, we think of a goal that we will reach oneday, good or bad. As if it were fixed and inevitable. When you Use Fickle to describe Destiny your basically saying "Our future path is unreliable" or "not fixed". It seems that to Ben's knowledge,he knows that the future is "Changeable". He has witnessed the proof perhaps?

Maybe what he means is that the path to destiny is fickle. Like how Charlie died. His death was inevitable but with Desmond's hep, he chose to die a hero when he could have died in so many other ways. You chose the path or journey you take but you always wind up in the same place no matter how you decided to get there. The path is the fickle part or your free will.
