Richard & his outfits

In tonight's episode and in La Fleur, Richard was wearing his...uh...normal clothes. But, when he meets Ben, which we can assume is not too many years before Sawyer et al. arrive at the Barracks, he's in his pirate-y clothes.

What is up with that? How, or more importantly, why does he turn into a clean-cut modernized guy in a matter of months?

I'm confused!!

I think he might be on some sort of time ride himself. poping in for a few day then leaving.
